Pinkunz Update (Hopefully the last, please help) Resolved!

Hello everyone,

It’s been a full year and I’d like to update everyone on what’s been going on.

(For those confused why I would need to update publicly, the sordid tale of soggy Dan can be found here, here, here, and here.)

One, I’ve gotten pretty good at getting around now. I don’t love the cane, but I’ve made my peace with it. I try to get to the pool when I can to allow low impact exercise. It is what it is.

Two, employment is harder. Not only do I find my coworkers and managers think and treat me differently, but I’ve found it much harder to convince potential employers to hire me in the first place. I just started a new job recently that I hope will be more amenable to all of that, but we’ll see. In the meantime, this is my third employer in the last year and not all of last year was spent employed, unless you count doordashing (still extremely slow).

Three, while trying to pin down my personal situation, I have been working to meet my other obligations. I expect to have an announcement regarding a certain beleaguered community event by the end of this month, the actual work attached to it is largely done. I also have some updates about SeedComp, believe it or not, that I’ll be making at the same time. In fact, my intent was to not make any public posts like this one until I was actually ready to do both of those things, including both of those with my own update. That said, that brings us to why I didn’t do that.

Four, our ceiling collapsed on my head Saturday afternoon. Plaster, drywall, and bits of wood and other detritus spontaneously dropped on me in our dining room while I sat at our kitchen table using our laptop.

A waste line from the upstairs bathroom sink had corroded and was slowly leaking every time it was used, slowly undermining the structural integrity of that ceiling until one day it was too much. We weren’t initially too alarmed, I was more distracted from the concussion I got from the falling plaster. That said, earlier today, my Brother-in-law climbed up in there intending on removing the bad section of pipe and making the repair so we could use the upstairs bathroom sink again. Which brings us to my final update.

Five, he quickly determined that the damage was far more extensive than he originally thought and exceeded his ability to fix it. So, we called a plumber. (Please note that I am decidedly not a plumber, so I’m describing the following as accurately as I can.) Well, after making more holes in the walls and ceilings, the plumber determined that the main stack and junction are entirely shot and are leaking into the walls every time any grey water leaves the house. He said the entire thing would need to be replaced and in the meantime we really shouldn’t use the toilet, shower, sinks, etc, as we’re just making the situation worse. He then gave us a quote, not to fix the walls and ceilings afterwards, just the plumbing itself. $4000. Yeah. He then tried to qualify us for financing for the repair, which we were both promptly declined for. We currently have $486.10 in our account, leaving us $3,513.90 short.

And that’s where we’re at. Still better in many ways, but, also screwed in the short term, again. We don’t have a way of fixing this ourselves. At the same time, this isn’t something we can defer, because we cannot clean dishes, shower, use the toilet, or wash our laundry without this first being fixed. So, we find ourselves in a position of swallowing our pride and humbling ourselves again. We thought we were past all of this, but we were wrong.

I come here to ask that folks might help us fix this. It is NOT your problem or your responsibility. That said, we sincerely need the help and the only thing we can do is ask for mercy and kindness to see us through.

I do want to say that we never would have made it this far without that same mercy and kindness in the past. Thank you, sincerely, for helping us survive. Thank you, forever, for helping me stay sane in the meantime.

Sincerely,

Pinkunz (Dan)

plumbers = extorsioners. 'nuff said.

said that, I have got a similiar near-identical incident (the difference being the leak coming from my sis’s terrace), my (former, but now in excellent relationship) brother in law being a “geometra” (surveyor, which in Italy also are registered foreman) was rather PO with my sis, and in the end the work was done “rule of art”.

Considered the economic & social situation in US of A, my suggestion about moving in the more welfare-friendy EU is more sound than earlier, at least IMVHO.

Best regards from Italy,
dott. Piergiorgio.

I have had MANY plumbing issues in my 3/4 century life. When I try to fix them myself, it rarely ends on a positive note: several trips to the hardware store for fittings and whatnot I didn’t know I needed, etc.

When my most recent disaster hit a couple of years ago during a winter storm in Texas, you would have thought plumbers were the equivalent of brain surgeons. The ceiling had collapsed in the living room, and water went everywhere. Several estimates were $10K plus. My daughter had a (plumber) friend from high school who saved our day.

Still have drainage problems that are hanging by a thread. But that’s another $10K repair that we had patched and kicked the can down the road.

I pitched in a few drops that I hope help a little.

You have buzzard’s luck!

Thank you, everyone, for your generosity. It never ceases to amaze me how kind people are. For the sake of being communicative about where we are, that $4000 bill is already down to $2800, which is wild. Thank you again for everyone who has helped so far, and thank you in advance to anyone willing and able to help us chip down what’s left.

Thank you,

Pinkunz

I really hope you get enough to pay for the plumbing. You have had awful luck these past few years and I’m crossing my fingers that this is finally the end of the … well, “streak” has the wrong connotations.

Yeah. I’m handy. I’ve built structures and I do a lot of my own home repair repair. I’ve only done a tiny bit of plumbing and a tiny bit of electrical, but enough of both to know: when there’s a real problem with those, call a professional. Those tradesmen make the money they do because both of those systems are foundational to a home, and amateur work will just fuck you up. The value of their expertise is real. $4k for the work that Dan is describing actually sounds pretty reasonable. I’ve paid almost as much to have a plumber spend a day doing small odd jobs, and more than that to have a new hot water tank installed.

Every time I hear about a plumbing issue, it’s always catastrophic. Why must water be so essential for us? QwQ

Water is essential for life and profoundly destructive for the same reason: its chemical reactivity as a universal solvent.

Thank you everyone! I tried to get the plumber to consider payments, but it’s credit or up front payment. Apparently he’s been burned too many times, which is understandable if unfortunate. Regardless, $4000 is down to $1806.56 $851.56 $750.80 $694.91 *ZERO*, which is, frankly, objectively amazing for whatever it’s worth. Thank you everyone for your generosity and kindness! We would have been months trying to deal with this on our own, and I have no idea how we would have done normal base life stuff in the meantime. Thank you in advance to anyone else considering helping.

If Cashapp hates you and won’t cooperate, please consider Private Messaging me. We can probably figure out a work around if you’re willing. Thanks either way, sincerely.

Chipped in a bit as well. Take care Pinkunz!

Do make sure you’re prepared to perform the ritual, just in case a boneless horse emerges from your plumbing…

Ugh, I hate the boneless horse. The ritual requires “salt”, but it’s not always NaCl.

As a disclosure, the Cashapp issue is almost certainly my fault for using a newly made account and tripping automated safeguards. We have DMs going and I will continue trying to chip into the anti-boneless horse fund.

Hello everyone, someone very generous just covered the last of that amount! I really cannot thank you all enough. We would have been months trying to solve this on our own, and it would have been ugly. But I’m putting this up first to stop anyone else from sending anything, and then I’m calling the plumber next.

Thank you thank you thank you!

Sincerely,

Dan & Heather
