Most probably get the reference, but for those who don’t, or want a refresher:
As for good things? Well, not to me specifically. Non-sportyball fans may wish to pass. But I hope there is a general positive message here.
If follow college basketball, you may still be laughing at what is going on in the Big Ten. With Michigan’s loss last night, there is a 7-way tie for 2nd, and there would be an 8-way tie if Rutgers hadn’t blown a 10-point lead to Minnesota with 90 seconds left. it might be 9 if the Michigan State/Minnesota game hadn’t been canceled for tragic reasons. It’s such a statistically improbable thing, though.
I was born in West Lafayette so I am a Purdue fan, and last night worked out well for me, between Illinois’s win over Michigan (clinched an outright title) and Purdue winning at a very decent Wisconsin squad. The best part of the game, besides the win, was that the indoor heating did not fail.
Many people (probably rightly) feel Purdue is overrated in the polls because the polls are a ladder and Purdue just consistently beat decent teams in front of them, and I have to agree with people who say Purdue is a good bet to get upset in the NCAA tournament. But all the same they did way better than expected this year & even if sports don’t really matter, and college sports has serious problems, it’s something to be grateful for & its getting back to normal in late 2020 helped a lot of people bounce back.
Without deluging folks with college basketball history, Purdue is one of those consistently very good teams that are never quite elite. Purdue hasn’t made the Final Four since 1980, which was before I was a Purdue fan. Due to steady success in the past decade, they also have the most NCAA tournament wins without a national championship, which is a title of sorts, though Gonzaga may overtake that mantle.
Whether or not we are sports fans, hopefully we’ve had some “You can’t always get what you want” moments where we know everything isn’t perfect, but we’d be fools to go back in the past and ask for a re-roll. That was the case last night.
