Whew, I loved Persona 5 Royal! Feel better.
Having a hot chocolate and some yummy pasta from yesterday for lunch- all while settling in to watch a new Atomic Shrimp video. His style of content seems like it’d jive with a lot of the meowmeows on here: a guy who knows his way around electronics, is retired and thus prone to indulging his flights of fancy like cooking meals on super tight budgets, scamming scammers, building tiny little useless things, trying out bizarre items in cans, foraging in the wilderness, and so on. He does it all with a sort of dry good natured Atlantic humour and perpetual bemusement at the oddities he runs across.
Also! The new sleep mask I bought is lovely. The scrunched up band and the way it’s a bit curved means that it lays basically perfectly against my face and blocks out light- I was a little concerned I might feel oddly about the material since it’s a lot slippy-er than my other one, but it was nice and cool and I didn’t wake up with it half tangled in my hair. I miss my black out curtains in the suburbs, but sleepmasks are always nice- especially cute ones. I love the design and the tiny little carrying pouch it has so much.
I got to write more lines for the cat mode in my SpringThing game. The player characters both have their own personalities, so the player is more there to guide them and experience stuff through the lense and perspective of the characters.
The normal player character is written to seem very utilitarian, calculating, driven, and tactical.
The cat player character, on the other hand, is very old and very egotistical.
So it’s endlessly entertaining to think of ways to describe the cat having difficulty with something, but then adding on something like “Oh, but you look like a king, even as you recovered from this negligible slip-up!”
It’s really hard to not just spend so much time on the cat, lol. However, I am quickly running out of time, so I need to save certain levels of detailing for the post-comp release.
Spring is upon us in central Texas! Flocks of cranes are flying over us, the goldfinches (which Tom calls Lemon Drops) are building nests, the trees have leaf buds, my bulbs have sprouted, and if we get enough rain (always an iffy prospect), we’ll be carpeted with wildflowers in a week or two. It’s time for my husband to put out the hummingbird feeders and start cooking up gallons of sugar water every week for the aggressive hordes.
And we STILL have Covid. I’m getting really tired of seeing that stripe on my test every morning that tells me I’m still a dangerous virus-bomb.
This game of yours keeps getting more intriguing every post I read about it.
The mention of flocks of cranes remind me of a novel I picked up at a secondhand store once- ‘The Echo Maker’ by Richard Powers, which is a book that explores the life of a man living with Capgras syndrome after a bad car accident and the people around him. It’s one of those books that sets out to blend more science heavy subject matter with an emotional slice-of-life narrative- a bit like the writing of physician-writers like Spencer Nadler, it’s quite grounded in the biological and ecological aspects. The crane migration plays a big part in the story alongside Mark’s condition, as well as threats like urbanization and development. Perhaps you’d like it! It’s quite a ‘slow’ paced book, (very literary in feel), but it was an enjoyable read.
Oh I love that novel (books about siblings are kind of my jam). Powers is great - he also wrote one called Galatea 2.2, which is his take on the Pygmalian myth.
Am I the only one who must think immediatly about the IF “Galatea”?
And to name something positive today: Well, I’ll cheat - I’ll mention something from yesterday: I got my electrical guitar delivered. It’s a new hobby and I’ve no clue whether I will be successful on the guitar. But if I don’t try I won’t find out.
Have you read ‘The Memory Keeper’s Daughter’ by Kim Edwards? It’s another very literary book, (in that the prose is pretty, the plot plays second fiddle to the characters, and the pacing is very slow and contemplative) about what happens when a set of twins is separated at birth because the daughter is born with Down’s Syndrome.
It follows the life of the characters for over 25 years, (the father, who also keeps this album of pictures of the girl we find out later on, Norah, his wife who is consumed with grief, Caroline, the nurse who raises Phoebe (that’s the girl twin, she’s a very sweet girl), and Paul, who is the boy twin and grows up quite sad and alone in a house that isn’t empty.) Don’t worry, the twins are reunited at the end of the book- (there’s a very sentimental bit with a wedding.)
Also bought it at the same secondhand store. It was apparently received quite divisively- (I think most readers were thrown off by how slow the plot is, since it’s a book primarily concerned with examining the characters and getting to know them and their motivations. Also, a lot of miscommunication between the husband and wife, which can be an annoying trope for some people.) I liked it, though! I cried while reading it, but I found the ending to wrap things up nicely.
Painted my nails a sort of shimmery deep red- think a total vamp-y colour. Going to layer it up once the first coat’s dried, and contemplating adding the pink tinted glossy sparkles I have over top… The sun is bright. The snow is melting. I’ve finished most of my cup of coffee!
Eheheheheheh c;
Yeah, cat mode is there for people to practice the map without the threat of an antagonist looming over you. Also if you’re brand-new to IF, it makes for a good space to just go absolutely ham. There’s no pressure to win in cat mode; just restart the game when you feel comfy and choose another difficulty mode.
After over a week of racking my brain, finally came up with the last unfinished part of my Spring Thing entry. Just in time to send to testers.
With the terrible weather recently, I haven’t seen any of my little pigeon buddies or the stray cats I occasionally encounter. I did, however, get this good picture of one of the melanistic squirrels in the city- most of them look like this, it’s far more unusual to see the little grey ones with standard wild type colouring.
Note: I was not feeding him the erhm, peanut, I think he has in his paws. I don’t feed the wildlife because it’s not good for them, (and the city is making it illegal this April anyways), but people invariably do.
Had a really rough night. I’m wearing my new dark raspberry with pink peace signs cropped sweater though, and I feel pretty cute- it’s got a sweater vest sort of neckline and I don’t normally wear anything cropped… Most of my sweaters are bulky sweatshirts or little cardigans. I did tuck in an undershirt beneath it, (especially since it’s chilly outside) but it’s nice! And has my favourite colour on it. Jinx made a hilarious edit for our Butterfly Court campaign and the little Zekes pasted made me laugh this morning when I was being scraggly in bed. I cut my bangs last night- and finished off painting my nails, which is also nice. :3
There was a creative-writing workshop in my kid’s school. Parents were invited to sit in, but not interfere (much) with the development of any stories the children came up with.
A die was used to decide on three elements: protagonist, place, problem.
My son has a basic story about Little Red Riding Hood who goes to a technology museum while on holiday. A burglar strikes a metal post with his hammer and causes static electricity to shortcircuit a time machine. Riding Hood is sucked through time to 1302, the Battle of the Golden Spurs in Kortrijk, a time period which fascinates him to no end. ( It was historic battle of the French knights against Flemish farmers and craftsmen. We happen to live about 2 kilometers from where it took place.)
Had to replace an almost-new tire because of a nail that lodged itself at just the right angle it wasn’t possible to patch it So I spent lunch at the library next door and got myself a nice cookie dough ice cream while they changed it.
I was even lucky: the shop only had one tire in their stock that would fit my car
Bumbled into Sam the security guard today. He didn’t recognize me at first- (might have been because I normally wear my hair up and look very grubby when he walks me to the bus stop, I look marginally less scraggly today since I didn’t get up at the break of dawn and blearily blink at him at night downtown) but was very nice.
He said that he liked my outfit and that all of the pink was ‘really cute’ which makes that the second person to comment on my outfit today- my professor mentioned really briefly about ‘all of that lovely pink!’ and examined my nails for a moment, (normally I don’t like people touching me, but she was nice about it and didn’t really grab onto me, it was more just resting my hand on her palm.) She also commented on how ‘oh, you have baby hands- they’re so soft and small’ which was kind of a funny thing to say.
My hands have been super soft ever since I started using handcreams regularly, (the winter winds have been brutal this year and I finally started wearing mittens and getting tired of calloused hands, though I still have my writer’s bump on my middle finger, it’s one I wear with a bit of pride) and the professor also commented on it which I thought was funny. Normally florals don’t smell nice on me, but the British Rose handcream I got has been tolerable, and I feel so fancy putting it on. I usually put on some before bed, alongside a strawberry chapstick to help set up some cues about it being bedtime soon, and while I’ve never really had the issue of fucked up lips because I’ve made it a conscious point for years now to drink enough water, it’s been a nice little ritual.
Tuned into the Narrascope news. So happy for and proud of Autumn! Goncharov Girlies WIN. It’s really nice to have something to look forward to this summer as well!
I’ve been listening to a playlist I made for one of my characters (Joshua, my favourite horrendously depressed wifeguy) because I usually click through those playlists when I’m getting tired of looping the same handful of songs on my main one, and I ran across Dawin’s ‘Freak Freak!’ and I forgot how fun some of his music is, (usually I’m looping his song ‘PTSD’ in my main playlist) because so much of his sound is like, 2000s partyboy music. It’s the kind of stuff my dad blasts in the car on the subwoofers. The flutes(?) or whatever are really interesting and crunchy to listen to. Been listening to some of his more fun stuff, like ‘Dessert’ because of the reminder, and it’s a good time. I should play some of his songs next time I’m in the shower instead of like, the usual countryrock.
