This one is my favourite now…

…and our whole house digs these mash-ups.

That guy’s channel is awesome. Thanks, man!

The song I was most interested in at Eurovision in 2023 was My Sister’s Crown by Vesna, the entry from Czechia. Because I think the chorus with its minor triad pile-of-harmonisation is very beautiful. But it turned out I was going to learn a lot of stuff from this song.

  • First, I didn’t know what Czechia was. It turns out it what the Czech Republic is now called, except I understand that most people living there don’t like the name.

  • The song is sung in four languages, English, Czech, Bulgarian and Ukrainian. A lot even for Eurovision.

  • This song’s lyrics touch on all of war, sisterhood, love, power, feminism, and caused controversy in both Russia and Ukraine. Some felt the references to sisterhood referred to the concept the same way the Russians used the concept of brotherhood to talk about bringing Ukraine back into the fold. But in Russia, the song was just banned. Presumably in case it’s about Russia’s warmongering (which it surely partly is). I expect it doesn’t take much to get banned in Russia at the moment.

  • Another interesting quality is that I’ve seen a lot of Eastern Europeans in the countries involved say they weep when they hear their own language used in this particular song. So it’s got a bunch of extra resonance I’m not connected to.

For the video, you can choose between the all-girl-pink-with-enormous-braids Eurovision performance - Vesna - My Sister's Crown (LIVE) | Czechia 🇨🇿 | Grand Final | Eurovision 2023 - YouTube
or the confusing-to-me official video with echoes of A Handmaid’s Tale or Squid Game - Vesna - My Sister's Crown | Czechia 🇨🇿 | Official Video | Eurovision 2023 - YouTube

Scrolling through Marybeth’s playlist tonight and I found this song! Still nice to put in the background as ambiance. Thinking of fishing out one of my old romance novels to read to it.

Really digging this band’s blend of organic and electronic sounds - there’s something about it that makes me feel like floating in time somewhere between the drum clicks and harp strumming. Personal fave song from this one starts around 4:47, *Is It Too Early (Kilmainnam).

Love Tiny Desk Concerts!

The first song in this set, Never Fight a Man with a Perm, is just great to listen to. They swapped out the guitar with a synthesizer and it just works so well. When Talbot puts his hands suggestively on his hips and turns around giving the audience a disgusted look is absolute gold. It was cool of them to get a couple of bewildered staff to play drums in the last song as well.

“He hates me. I LIKE THAT!”

The album recording is here, for comparison. Also, it’s a cute video if you like Street Fighter. Highly recommended for gaming nerds.

I’ve been listening to some of BONAVEGA’s songs lately, and I like the crunchiness to Hot Over You. I’m especially fond of the track Pain and Pleasure, it’s really- sweet? Especially in the unplugged version. And Heavenly fits one of my characters so perfectly, I kind of have to like it- it also kind of oddly reminds me of some of the boybands I used to listen to a lot.

If you’ve ever wished you could be a rock star, Sing Street is one of those movies that you can live vicariously though… and all that awkward teenage stuff too. It leans towards the 80s, but in all the right ways. It features a couple of really great original tracks that keep finding their way into my playlist…

Riddle of the Model

Drive It Like You Stole It

It’s a great film. Definitely make an effort to watch it.

Don’t listen to music as much as I used to.

(This one’s only like 3 minutes long if you’re trying to be careful with budgeting your time.)

You guys heard My Hero by Foo Fighters? That one I performed in the end-of-year school assembly to the two years above me (with my band).

Also:

  • Hysteria by Muse
  • Epic by Faith No More
  • (for a more peaceful piece) Weird Fish/Arpeggi (cover by Rodrigo y Gabriela)

I absolutely love Faith No More. Mike Patton went on to do a quite a lot of other projects. One of his best was Tomahawk. When I first heard Captain Midnight, I immediately thought of the Foo Fighters. Captain Midnight has a chorus in the middle that just… SCREAMS ROCK! It’s something that Dave Grohl would most likely approve of.

…for those interested in Tomahawk, I suggest:

Stone Lettercrazy excellent!
God Hates a Cowardgas mask vocals done right
Southpaw
Sun Danceunmatched indigenous vibe (check it out)

I like the middle of that song! Plus, the start-ish has a really weird pulsing beat.

I have a crazy (but not massively big) playlist here. My favourite songs you’ll find at the start and end (so: Paranoid Android, Jigsaw Falling Into Place, 2 + 2 = 5, to name a few). About half the songs are the best of Radiohead (most of their songs are quite bad though).

If you have any playlists, send them straight away! (I’m going to try adding the song you recommended to my playlist.)

Today I have mostly been listening to The New Model Village People on SoundCloud. They’re AMAZING!

Full disclosure:

The New Model Village People are me and my friend Mark. Neither of us are musicians or have any musical training, so we thought it would be fun to form a band. Our most accessible tracks are probably EGGS, The Melancholy of Machines and The Love of Hats - Extended. I’m also quite pleased with Have a Good Gone and my favourite so far is Transhumanist Tango.

Youtube’s been serving up a tasting flight of new (to me) bands the past few days. I’ve been getting a lot of runtime out of Honeythief by Halou. Lots of echo and concrete-grit guitar under vocals that are half-sung, half-spoken. It’s sitting next to Siouxie Sioux’s Love Crime on my mental cassette tape shelf.

Sadly not included here cuz it’s my favorite from the album, but this is a terrific live performance of most of In Rainbows: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWuAn6C8Mfc

And this is also, to my ear, oddly delightful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2JHChJpG_A
