Oh and here’s my most recent monthly playlist.
Something in here for everyone! And quite a lot for no one ![]()
I’m trying to put my finger on your influences. Have you ever listened to Slint? Very experimental, even by today’s standards. You might like their album Tweez, if guitar distortion doesn’t scare you off. Not bad for a Kentucky band from the 80s, eh? ![]()
Slint - Carol
Fun Fact: All the songs on Tweez are the names of their parents and one of their dogs.
Haha, I’ve never been asked a question like that before! I think of Mark and I as just people who like to muck around with a DAW. But I’m a big fan of Daevid Allen’s Bananamoon Obscura musical collaborations, things like 50 Foot Hose, Henry Cow, Faust, Can, Neu, Broadcast, The Focus Group, Negativland, Chrome, and obviously Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart. But these are all ACTUAL MUSICIANS, not people who like to muck around with a DAW. To be fair to Mark, he can actually pick out a tune on a piano, albeit twofingeredly. It’s fun because we don’t really know what we’re doing, and we mostly do it to make each other laugh. But our most recent tracks are definitely better than our early ones.
I had not heard of Slint, but I will certainly be giving them a listen!
Got this song recommended to me at one point. It’s really good, and not exactly the kind of song I was expecting to be made by Mick Gordon, since he’s mostly known for the heavy metal of his DOOM soundtracks. But it’s got cool synths and I like it!
I had the great fortune of seeing Slint live several years back (google says that was 2014, times flies!). It was a great show, and not a band I thought I’d ever get a chance to see.
I recommend the documentary about them called Breadcrumb Trail. They were a group of teenagers from Louisville who spent all their free time practicing at one of the kids’ parent’s house. They sort of developed their own musical language and were a precursor to the post-rock genre.
Their album Spiderland is worth checking out as well. Less wacky than Tweez, but more emotional.
I haven’t listened to Spiderland. Will check it out. That’s so cool that you got to see them.
Steve Albini had his fingers in just about everything that was influential back then. Amazing.
This song is absolutely perfect.
It will also strip the paint off any surface and degrease your car’s engine.
Please listen responsibly.
Every Time I Die - Sly
Damn right!
That’s a fantastic song! Thanks so much, man.
This one always bounces around in my mind and is one of the reasons I enjoy songs with a bit of a chaotic beat…

…and now for a fun break with a classic video that should be compulsory for all drummers…
…now that’s showmanship. ![]()
I’ve been bopping through my playlist and letting random songs resurface up from it. Here’s some particularly nice listens:
When I have a difficult time falling asleep, I like to put on my headphones and close my eyes to drift off a bit to music. Usually it’s with more mellow tracks, and last night I dozed off to the sound of this song, which has long been a favourite:
Also listened to this song, which is a perfect fit for my OCs Joel and Andrey given current events in the TTRPG campaign, though a chunk of it also fits Joel and Esme, and also Nikolai and Andrey:
Been absolutely obsessed with this artist lately. Went through all of their albums on YouTube Music. All of it really resonates with me.
I’ve been listening to a lot of Chromeo again lately, their sound is so smooth and fun, and their music videos are usually a treat to watch- really cinematic, beautifully shot, and playful.
I rediscovered this gem last night.
There’s also the Living Tombstone remix, which was how I originally discovered the song.
I think I prefer the original version, but both are great. The original’s slower and got some really cool synths, but the TLT remix has a good beat and also a really interesting music video.
The band has some other really cool songs too. Some of my favorites are Broken and Computer Guy. Epoch is my favorite above the rest, though.
Oh, and Savlonic is a project made by MrWeebl, who you may recognize as the creator of this:
And this:
So yeah, interesting to rediscover. It’s a bit of a wacky band, but I like artists that don’t take their stuff too seriously and just make some catchy and fun tunes. The wackiness is generally part of its charm for me.
Ian’s recommendations reminded me of Tobuscus and I had forgotten some of the great songs and content that guy made. They still hold up today.
Notable mentions:
Absolutely enamored with this song.
I have recently discovered Adhesive Wombat.
A+, would recommend.
I’m diving backwards into my late teens, the time when I discovered electronic music isn’t just flat plastic repetitiveness.
- Goldie - Jah The Seventh Seal
- Prodigy - Speedway (Theme From Fastlane)
- Leftfield - Original
- Chemical Brothers - It Doesn’t Matter
- Daft Punk - Rollin’ & Scratchin’

Enjoy!
