Summer has passed, and with it the abundance of fresh tomatoes, courgettes, aubergines, and other sunny foodstuffs. But along comes fall, with its own cornucopia of autumnal delicacies.
We have beautiful leeks, savoy cabbage, carrots, sorrel, and blackberries.
My mind is overflowing with ideas for simple and hearty dishes and stews!
Decided to skip doing interpreting work today, instead I recorded bass and did a preliminary mix for a song. Now waiting to see if I can visit a friend in the weekend so he can contribute harmonica or if he’s swamped with work again. XD
We’re getting huge amounts of rain from Hurricane Helene even though it’s just hitting the coast right now. Apparently the Blue Ridge mountains are a magnet for hurricane rains. We’ve already gotten 5" and the big stuff isn’t here yet, so I’m anticipating flooded roads, fallen trees, and general havoc from the forecast 18". Hopefully a landslide does not bury us.
To soothe my nerves, I’m working on the elusive orange curd tart recipe. Until today I’ve been underwhelmed by my results, and I’m happy to report that today’s effort is terrific. Orange is a delicate flavor, so you have to reduce a lot of fresh juice down and add some lemon to give it a little tartness. Also played with the recipe to try and make it a little creamier but still firm, successfully. Always so satisfying to cook something that meets the standard I set in my head.
Longest long training run for my upcoming marathon completed today. The weather did its absolute best to stop me but I persevered!
It’s my and my husband’s 30th wedding anniversary today. We eloped, as young university students. Luckily hired a photographer so have photos! No guests. The photographer acted as one witness. The registrar dragged in a lady off the street to be the other Very happily still together all these years on. Having a quiet day. I’ve been mainly asleep so far!
Congratulations to you both!
Congrats on making it to a spenic number(a number that is the product of 3 distinct primes, of which 30 is the smallest as 30=2*3*5, the next one is 2*3*7 = 42).
I am so telling my space scientist husband that one. Cheers
An oddly-specific thing: it’s been reported for a long time that there are three clay tablets in existence that have cuneiform inked on them as opposed to impressed into them. One of those is a mistake—a 20th-century author claimed it was written with ink, but modern photos show that it was scratched with a sharp point—and I have photographs of the two others, thanks to the British Museum.
But it turns out there is a third one, and I finally found a source that gave me the British Museum accession number of it (it’s K.6677), and it’s time to analyze it and figure out what it means for my theories!
Spending time with family I haven’t seen in a while.
Exploring a new place today!
I have electricity, probably for only a brief moment in time, but it’s so awesome. For those who don’t know, all of western North Carolina is a disaster zone. I am probably one of a handful of people in the whole region with power (which I have had for 30 whole minutes). I’m also one of the few people without a river running through my house right now. So that’s all really positive.
Stay safe!

Birthday celebrations today (for tomorrow)! Very fun, my friends all put in money to get me ear defenders so I could play and it wouldn’t damage my hearing.
But neutral: yes, hurricanes have been going north for quite a while; I grew up in NY and spent lots of time in Massachusetts as a kid in the 80s, and we got hit with three or four hurricanes even back then (but of course frequency and intensity of hurricanes is being driven by climate change so I’m pretty sure things are getting worse - we never had anything like Sandy).
Positive: just found out I had this thread inadvertently muted for months - which is bad but on the plus side I have lots to catch up on!
Glad you and yours are safe. Many, many communities will be struggling for a while. My sister is in SC and will be without power for at least another week. The whole grid is out in her town.
The good news is, she already had a month long trip planned and is leaving tomorrow. That’s a positive!
Got back from my trip to Europe yesterday. I had a great time, but it felt good to wake up in my own home this morning.
Hope everyone stays safe out there!
Today’s positive: back home again and catching up with my favourite TV shows.
