Oh, what kind of self-employment do you do?
I’m a proofreader
Today’s positive: doing some online shopping for shiny things tonight.
my friend and I did our talk at Game Devs of Color and it went well! I’ve been anxious about it for months so I’m both content and exhausted
Another nice dozy afternoon with work done for the week.
Needing the fire on every now and again. Love the process of autumn.
I wish we got fall in these parts. September has only been too hot for the most part instead of too damn hot, but it’s still warm enough I want my AC running 24/7 and whish it wasn’t prone to bouts of refusing to do more than run its fan for hours on end.
A nice quiet afternoon to myself today. Playing some new videogames and getting some reading in.
Yesterday my best friend and I went to the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent.
Museum voor Schone Kunsten Gent | MSK Gent
The main focus of the collection is paintings from the Low Lands (historically this term refers roughly to the area where modern Belgium and the Netherlands are) from the 18th and 19th century, especially portraits. There is also a fine smaller selection of mediaeval religious works, some baroque and renaissance masters, and some early 20th century abstract art.
I can’t explain why, but this portrait mesmerised me. I stood before it for a long time:
Portrait of Mrs. Adolphe Neyt, 1871, by Emile Auguste Carolus-Duran
After spending 3 hours in the museum, we walked around the most beautiful city in the world for another 3 hours.
Today was one of those days of absolutely perfect weather. It was both warm in the sun and cool in the shade, with a gentle breeze and a perfectly soft blue sky dotted with puffy clouds. Wildflowers grow like crazy at this time of year in North Carolina, and there are golden and purple flowers everywhere. The trees are changing color, so although there’s still a lot of intense green, there’s also yellow and orange and vivid red, with leaves falling and carpeting the mossy ground. The mountain streams and creeks are full from a big rain earlier this week (that tropical storm was hard on the coast, but fantastic here) and the water rushing over stones is so noisy. It makes me a little sad that we’re gearing up to go back to Texas in a couple of weeks.
Also, I made pickle-brined, pretzel-crusted pan-fried chicken tenders and they were SO GOOD. So pickle-y and crunchy and delicious.
Wishing you all the best, Sophia.
Today’s positive: happy mood and feeling motivated on a busy work day.
Best wishes, Sophia !
Piergiorgio.
Quick stop for a coffee (and caramel shortcake!) while shopping in town this afternoon.
I remember reading this strip I’m the Review section of the Guardian when the comic first came out! Very weird to see it now years later.
Working on my promotion application. The anxiety is through the roof, but despite my assertion on another thread, the positive is the lorazepam is working and I haven’t broken anything or anyone yet.
Update: I put down interactive fiction as part of my scholarly work (although I’m not really required to have a record of scholarly activity in my position).
Realized I had missed several days of Cell Tower word puzzles so I went back and bam! Did #874 in 2:22, 873 in 2:18, 872 in 1:33, and 871 in 1:35. I know there are people faster than that, but that’s excellent speed for me. Really happy with that.
Some nice parcels starting to arrive following my online shopping at the weekend.
One that @ericlathrop might appreciate - I went on a short birding walk around my local area this morning. Autumn/winter always feels like the best time of year for birding to me (not just because of Weird Duck Time). The birds always seem more active and as the leaves fall it’s easier to spot the more elusive species without foliage getting in the way.
I saw a jay picking berries first thing, shortly followed by a tree absolutely teeming with nuthatches. In the park there were goldcrests, blackbirds and blue tits, as well as the grey heron who occasionally visits the pond (pictured below).
On my way home I’m also pretty sure I caught glimpse of my favourite bird of all time, the bullfinch - I haven’t had a clear sighting of one in months and I can’t wait to see more of them as the leaves keep thinning out!
