I started making music with trackers, and hearing Photek was like a lightbulb moment - I recognised his influence on some of my favourite trackers, like Josh “Darkhalo” Barnett and Marco “Pedro” Pietribasi of Charlie Brown Records.
I really like this kind of 1990s fusion of drum and bass/jungle beats with mellow or ambient melodies and production.
I think it’s fun how people occupy completely different musical universes. I listen to new music just about every day or so, but I’ve only heard maybe three of these 98 songs.
I think the Icebergify generator shows this idea quite well. The more people spend exploring deeper cuts, the more alien their musical world becomes.
In general: lots of post-punk. Protomartyr and Broadcast have been getting the most play around here lately, and I’ve recently become obsessed with Unwound (having written them off out of snobbery when they were actually recording and releasing stuff).
However: the current leading candidate for “project most likely to progress out of the vaguest planning stages” is a horror story set in '89, so I’m starting to shift towards modern rock from that era. The Cure, Pixies, Sonic Youth, stuff like that.
Haha when I like a band I like to explore all the corners. Same reason I’ve heard so much Gothic Archies, The Sixths and Future Bible Heroes after getting into The Magnetic Fields. I could eat this stuff all day:
They’re great. I first heard them after seeing The Sophtware Slump cd in a jumble sale above a church in some pokey market town I was visiting, maybe 17 year ago. I liked the look of the cover and thought I’d take a punt and I’ve listened to them since. They recent reformed and have a new album out, Blu Wav.
I’ll have to check these out. I love a lot of post-punk but it is such a broad label. Gang of Four, Wire, and, say, Mekons have as much different than they have the same.
For anyone unfamiliar, here’s some Mekons that’s all about the 80s:
I’m really tempted to make an iceberg of what I listen to, but there are literally so many artists and my idea of what’s popular or not is entirely unreliable.
Meanwhile, currently listening to Venjent:
Also kinda doing “market research”. I’d like tweak this kind of style a certain way for Silverbacks.
I promise I will not put DnB-adjacent music in all of my IF-Octane projects. I will switch it up here and there, lol. I also promise I will keep the DnB-adjacent music appropriate for reading, lmao.
Probably the best frame of reference for Protomartyr is “what if the Fall were from Detroit?”
Broadcast is difficult to describe – I’d basically say they’re in the style of '60s British psychedelia, but instead of nostalgia they took a more “hauntalogical” approach that evokes the style without sounding much like any specific actual legacy band. Their music gives me the sort of vibe I get from Boards of Canada. I also see parallels between them and Matt Berry’s musical output, which I heartily recommend.
Admittedly, I have no clue who Failure is. But the rest are pretty straightforward… My music tastes are very small. Also I would add artist Alex West at the very very bottom. His most popular song has <1000 views and around 10 monthly listeners. But his song Truth I am fond of. Also I’ve listened to Atoms for Peace, like, once.
I chose “all time” since the August one is messed up with things I never remember even hearing and some main ones not even being there. It was very strange. I guess I used to listen to Weezer more?
Wanna help me double my monthly listeners? From six, apparently? No reflection on the quality of the music, which is the same as I’d be making if I had 1 million listeners. I have not punctured a critical mass and I haven’t played live since 2017.
Try this opener from my second-last EP. The preview shows no info so let’s see what happens when I post this. EDIT - Ah, it worked.
I can’t focus on anything productive with music playing.
Also, loud music or rythmic noises like someone just bouncing a basketball on the street trigger migraines for me. Beacuse of that I don’t enjoy concerts, large crowds or other noisy gatherings.
The only concert I ever enjoyed was an outdoor Moody Blues concert.
I have trouble focusing with music playing as well… but that’s because I’m so dependant on a screen reader for anything digital. If I’m working with my hands on something tangible and have no auditory reference materials to refer to, I’m just fine with music playing. Not a fan of loud concerts either, nor rowdy crowds. give me a small venue that seats dozens with a band playing unplugged or a solo singer letting their voice carry to a venue that seats thousands and has gigantic amps any day.
Anyways, felt like crap yesterday, to the point I couldn’t concentrate well on surfing the web, so I decided to unwind with some Voltaire, mostly highlights from his albums that were already back catalog when I first discovered his music. The Binge included, among other songs:
God Thinks
The Headless Waltz
Alchemy Mondays
The Vampire Club
Land of the Dead
Day of the Dead
Cannibal Buffet
Death Death Devil devil evil evil songs
Crusade
Goodnight, Demonslayer
When you’re Evil
The Beast of Pirate’s Bay
Riding a Black Unicorn
The Mechanical Girl
The Straight Razor Cabaret
You brought up my two favourite Pixies songs. Which obviously gets me to listen, but makes me very very picky. So I didn’t like the Velouria cover. Too many important notes from the original are missing. I did like the Alec Eiffel cover, which didn’t have that problem.
