What are you listening to?

“Alkohol” by Grönemeyer. A German song about you-can-guess-what and it’s not praising it.

Here’s that video:

and a video with the exact opposite sentiment:

I went to one of their shows back in the 80s.

Wow. Can’t get it out of my head.

There’s also a Radio Edit if you don’t want that beginning part, if you’re going to listen to it a lot.

You know their full name, right? Fink Ployd.

Ugh, now I’ve listened to so much depressing Pink Floyd, I need this to compensate:

Stumbled across this fansong randomly, and I figured some of the meows on the board probably would like to listen to it too.

Another random find. Kind of reminded me of Hozier’s music.

Kevin’s my favourite Youtuber, (his videos always make me laugh, no matter how meowsarable I’ve been) and he also sings/plays the guitar. He did a cool renovation video recently of a RV, too!

I somehow managed to be completely ignorant of Naked Raygun’s existence back in their heyday… but it’s better late than never.

Naked Raygun - Treason

That Mad Max style cover art is so good!

I’m in a period where I listen mostly to female voices. Joan Baez, June Tabor, Beth Gibbons, and this album from my favourite female singer:

[Night in the City by Joni Mitchell]

Three things, all in one.

  1. I really love the live version of Radiohead’s Like Spinning Plates. The album version is completely different. This is the live: Like Spinning Plates
  2. I heard somewhere recently that somebody was playing Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors, which is from the same album as the studio version of LSP. Now if you haven’t heard this song, it’s crazy and not super musical. Don’t worry, I’ll give the link in a sec.
  3. The above two songs (studio versions) share a music video. First goes Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors, which actually has a fairly cool video, with no Content Warnings. But then get to LSP, and the music video is terrifying. CW two babies fused to a machine, spun around, and had their ribs removed without any blood or gore at all. It’s nothing violent, gory, jumpscare, or the like. It’s just weird.

(See content warning in the third point above. From 2:42 onwards, you have been warned.)

This song has always stuck in my mind. It’s a bit haunting to think about a scenario where you are locked in a dream state. Chad VanGaalen does the music and animation himself. Pretty amazing! I’m also thinking we need more xylophone in music these days.

Chad VanGaalen - Clinically Dead

From 1982. Japan doesn’t get enough attention.

I think Joan Baez is really great, both texts and voice. I don’t know the other two (yet).

I first wanted to write that female voices aren’t great in current pop music, but then I noticed that that’s not true. I don’t remember the names but I remember great voices.
