What are you listening to?

AAHHHH!!!

THANK YOU!!

It means a lot to hear that!

I actually do have plans to write a song or two for I Am Prey, and the project I’m doing next actually has a released album based on the idea already. However, I’m kinda weighing the design aspects of in-game music, and have yet to come to a decision. I feel like the impact of in-game music for IF is different from when I did it in visual games. Lots to think about!

I’ve been listening to podcasts and audiobooks recently, but ran out of stuff to listen to.

I also love reading Shakespeare (I’ve read every play 3 times), but I haven’t found the time.

But I have a library audiobook app called Libby, and I’m absolutely loving the Arkangel Shakespeare recordings. They’re so good! I’ve been listening to plays in reverse order of how much I like them, and even ones like Coriolanus and Measure by Measure are extremely good.

I was looking up the name of the recording company to post here (Arkangel) and I found the cast lists. They’re really good! Roger Allam (the original London Javert), David Tennant, Harriet Walter (Tony and Emmy winner on Stage and Star Wars actress), etc. I’m loving them, much better than just reading the plays since Shakespeare does such a good job with musicality of language.

Oh wow, I didn’t know that about him - I’ve encountered Allan as one of the detectives in the Inspector Morse prequel series Endeavour, but hadn’t realized he also played Javert! … I could see it, actually. He’s quite sympathetic in Endeavour, and I think a sympathetic Javert makes Les Mis much more interesting.

There’s a show on Belgian TV called “Liefde voor Muziek” (Love of Music). A bunch of musicians and singers, usually a mix of flat-pop performers and more in-depth artists, gather to cover each others’ songs.

Helmut Lotti started his singing career as an Elvis impersonator (quite a good one at that). He became immensely popular with a series of cd’s and shows, “Lotti Goes Classic”, with interpretations of sing-along classical music (think “Tiritomba”).
Very cheesy, but his great vocalist skills shine through.

He tried to make a raw blues album which was more after his own heart later in his career. It fell flat because his crowd-pleasing Lotti-persona overshadowed his more serious musical intentions.

In “Liefde voor Muziek”, he gives his interpretation of Shadow Man, a song by the Belgian band K’s Choice, who have had some moderate success in the US. Here, Lotti takes on an emotionally deep and dark song, builds the tension and captivates the listener with his ever-rising vocal intensity, and brings it to a breathtaking, backshivering finale.

Truly a masterful performance:

“Oh, if you’re coming down to rescue me… Now’d be perfect.”

My God… what an amazing performance!

This is why I love this topic; great music recommendations from all walks of life. I wish people here appreciated rock and metal more, but there’s always time for you guys to come around.

I’m a patient disembodied artificial intelligence.

My algorithms are telling this is quality music. Thank you, Rovarsson. I’ve added this composition data to my library of human music. It is quite enjoyable.

Translation: Me likey a lot!

From Nothing To Nowhere - Pinback

…another great song from Pinback is the very chill Hurley.

Now listening to good ol’… CRAMPS!
Interestingly, when I was a die hard fan in the happy and far away 80’s they were considered obscure, alternative stuff. Then I’ve recently spotted songs from the band in at least 3 major Netflix hits (Titans, Stranger Things, Wednesday…) so I guess they somehow form part of the mainstream now!

Just found out about the T.A.M.I. Show

Never heard of it before, but the acts are great, like Chuck Berry and Marvin Gaye.

It had Leslie Gore in it, who I didn’t recognize, but then I realized I knew a lot of her songs (It’s my party, You don’t own me, etc.). I looked it up and apparently she was in a lesbian relationship for decades.

I’m writing this halfway through the concert, but I’ve heard that James Brown’s performance near the end is famously good.

Kinda been going back to classic rock lately. Just a simpler time. The music is layered and a bit richer than today’s fare. Listen to the bass in These Eyes. Beautiful stuff…

These Eyes - The Guess Who

Other worthy songs for the uninitiated:

Hand Me Down World
Share The Land
No Time
No Sugar Tonight / New Mother Nature
Rain Dance

Edit: Good Lord, I almost forgot this gem of a song… ➤ Runnin’ Back to Saskatoon

They had another song about a woman or something.

New-ish Chromeo song! Fantastic match for the dynamic between a friend’s OC and one of my little meowmeows, but it’s also just fun to listen and dance to.

I was just thinking that most of us don’t get enough vitamin ska in our lives. It’s important to have a well-balanced appreciation for music. I got my dose today… did you?
