web interpreters and mobile devices (looking for testers with android devices)

We’ve got an Android tablet, I can take a look and see if it’s any different on there. Stand by, I’ll report back!

Okay, Samsung tablet report: Firefox works alright in both portrait and landscape mode. It keeps the input field in focus and the keyboard stays put, keyboard doesn’t obstruct or cover any text, scrolling isn’t a problem.

Chrome on the tablet behaves identically to the browsers on a phone, though; keyboard stays put, obscures text, can’t scroll down to see both keyboard and input field at the same time.

Interesting! Can you get the keyboard to recede in Firefox? Or is it “sticky?”

Yep, tapping the screen hides the keyboard, and clicking the input field will bring it back.

So, this is unfortunate. I was hoping that we could at least find a browser to recommend for Android with Quixe, but without consistency from device to device I don’t know that this is possible.

All iOS browsers are actually Safari. Apple don’t let other browsers use their real rendering engine. So you should expect identical results.

Sorry for the delay, I’m exploring Berlin. Tried the latest link on Android, same problem. The keyboard pops up over the input and the page cannot be scrolled down.

Not true. Last time I tested, iOS Firefox behaved differently than iOS Safari.

All iOS browsers are based on Webkit, but there’s a lot of behavior above that.

Huh. Maybe they’re allowed to configure WebKit or something? Or they’re using the system WebKit component but Safari is allowed to use a newer one? In any case it’s not genuine Firefox or genuine Chrome.

Out of consideration of iPhone’s safari base, I revisited Opera and Firefox. It took a long, boring time, but opera eventually did the overlay behavior. I still can’t recreate it with Firefox. This makes sense in light of Zarf’s experience. Firefox also handles the itch frames/Parchment situation differently.

I’m on the fence about recommending Firefox for iOS. There’s a slight delay while it fills in the screen after raising or lowering the keyboard. This difference is probably related to its more desirable behavior with regard to keyboard overlay, but the delay is a little off-putting. Perhaps it isn’t bad enough to discourage players form using it. It’s the best option for iOS now but it’s not perfect.
