Usage of AI images in instruction manual with game

Hope all of you are doing well.

I am in the midst of my current project, “Infected” being made with inform 7. I’d like to include a colored instruction manual with my project when it’s released (likely long time from now). Im ok to semi decent at pixel art, but I would prefer the instruction manual to have detailed pictures of things such as the main characters private investigation badge, weapons you can get, etc.

What would the general opinion be of using some AI created images such as like a fake revolver to be used etc. in the manual? It would be literally a few pictures AI generated in the entire game/package. I am used to doing everything manually on any project I’m working on, so it’s new territory for me.

I guess another option could be take photos of props, but I’d be worried about any potential copyright issues etc.

Thanks for the input.

If you don’t want AI, I could render you some things if you like. Simple props and objects are easy. Characters, less so. All my renders are copyright compliant.

Thank you. I am not quite to making the manual. When I get to that point, if i don’t use AI I will definitely shoot you a DM if that’s alright. Thank you again.

I would recommend stock photos rather than AI-generated ones. This community tends to be heavily opposed to generative AI, and associating your whole project with genAI for the sake of a few photos in the manual is likely to be a bad tradeoff in the end.

Thank you for the input. Glad I asked as I’m still new to the community etc. learning. Thanks again.

Personally, I have no issue with AI assets that are not in the game itself, but there are plenty of people on here who have issues with any form of AI.

I think @Draconis’s suggestion to use stock photos is a good one if using photographs, but even photos use AI anywhere from in-camera to post-processing to completely AI generated to look like real photos. Make sure you read the fine print. In a recent photo search, I had trouble finding photos that weren’t AI generated.

If you take the photos yourself, then there’s no (or minimal) AI issue and you retain the copyright. This may be your best option.

Thanks for the input, Garry. Definitely helps when weighing options for the future plans.

If you add before:2022 to your search you can get only non-generative-AI-generated images.

That’s a good idea. I have noticed that most respectable art sites do allow you to filter out AI-generated stuff in your search results. It may be the same for stock photo sites.

I don’t know how AI pics will be received but I can share my experience with using ChatGPT, one of the better AI pic generators.
I wanted to add a few pics to my novel and I created about a dozen throughout the book. However, some required ten or 12 tries to get it right, and sometimes it never got it right. You might have to settle for less than your original intent with AI pics.

This thread has a lot of places to find assets.
