The all-important Boatiness Quotient

What about a goat stuffed animal? It could come with a photo album and each winner could put in a photo of the goat on a boat (or by a body of water). Bonus points if they updated the community on the BOAT GOAT’s adventures.

Going to be so real… I’d be willing to make one. I have enough time on my hands right now, since I’m off of school.

The stuffed animal sounds much more fun than what I was considering, which was basically just a little commemorative token!

I’ve been reading and playing along, but can someone finally explain to me where the GOAT came from?

Originally short for “Greatest Of All Time”, now usually meaning “awesome” or “best”.

Yeah – I think largely originated by Muhammad Ali.

Ooooh… Thanks.

Do any of these boat games include the NONAV spell?

/yells “I’m a busy man” into a cell phone before whipping up this…

The rating range is now from -1 to 12.

Also, thanks to all who gave likes. It’s at 25, and it’s my first “nice topic” award ever. I’m very flattered.

Maybe missed a trick in not calling it a “Boatient”.

How do we calculate the score for harbours, oil rigs, space stations,… even when no actual boatlike vessel is in sight?

Or a shipwreck survivor hanging onto a buoy?

I love the boat rubric.

Although “4 = Boat solely to move between rooms” in my head ended up looking something like this:

If Herzog’s “Fitzcarraldo” was done as IF, I’m guessing it would be:

8: Takes place mostly on boat, with stopoffs at scenic items or to buy supplies, and

-1: Takes place on a mountain

8 - 1 = 7

or would it be the mean (8 - 1) / 2 = 3.5?

I love your ranking and as much as I’d love to claim 11 for EtE, it doesn’t play on (or better, in) a submarine.

Oh geez. Oops. You’re right. What was I thinking? I blame the IFComp time crunch for totally wiping my mind.

Everyone, go play EtE to verify how wrong I was, and stuff.

I can only explain this with genuine telepathy, because I’m working on a game that is largely set in a submarine, but I haven’t told you (or anyone else) about it yet.

One of my next projects was supposed to be in a submarine! Shall we meet again in a future submarine-themed If Comp?

Haha … that is awesome you have a new idea. I’m totally going to frame this brain-slip of mine as proof I’m some sort of unappreciated empathic visionary, shunned and repressed by society  !

That, and then the next logical step is to collaborate on a game dangerously close to Earth’s core.

For no particular reason*, I have been thinking about boatiness, and I have reached the conclusion that we should nickname each IFComp edition, i.e. “IFComp 2023, the Boaty One”. We should use this as often as possible, until it becomes policy and the IFComp incorporates it as subtitle/baseline for each year. I’m pretty sure each year has had a leitmotiv. In time, it will become an obnoxious shibboleth

"Hey, do you remember IFcomp 2024?"
"I remember the No Ships Allowed One."
"What? Who, why? When?"
"...peasant."

…and that’s when you know you’ve won.

'* procrastination.

Next time there’s an uncomfortable silence, I’l know what to say.

It’s that or the Roman Empire.

Is there any IF where you play as a boat? Because, that’d be at least a 12.

(Edit: Bah! Ninja’d by Victor. But I stand behind my one-higher ranking, Spinal Tap style.)
