Tagfest 2024: Suggested tag consolidations

Success! I wondered if it was something like that. Looks like we’re in business! I’ll go through and block all my mergers.

FYI, IFWiki used to have a Choose Your Own Adventure page, and a few years ago, the page was renamed “choice-based interactive fiction” instead, as that had become the more predominant term, and also because the term Choose Your Own Adventure/CYOA had become controversial (because of legal concerns and because it had a negative connotation).

(So I would not merge choice-based into cyoa–if anything, I’d do the reverse. I think CYOA might be more common as a tag just because it’s older.)

Can you do “SF” as well? That one seems to be a common tag…

Adding to this: there’s also a player character customization tag.

(And for the plain customize tag, there’s also customisation and customizable.)

If we want to merge SF with something, we might want to check to see how it’s being used first, because it can mean speculative fiction or science fiction: Speculative fiction - Wikipedia

That’s a good point! I just checked, and it looks like every game tagged “sf” is also tagged “science fiction”, whereas there’s no overlap between games that are tagged “speculative fiction” or “speculative” and games that are tagged “sf”.

Okay, sf is now merged with science fiction.

I’m still working my way down this thread.

I counted over 2000 tags that only have 1 associated game, btw, and many of those aren’t that great (one is like ‘even better than south park’) but I’d rather focus on really common tags and offensive tags, so this thread has been helpful so far!

Thanks for all the work you’re doing on this!

The work you’re doing is fantastic! I wish I had that sort of commitment - it’s awesome.

Tags used by one game are generally not problems. They are often just waiting for someone to come along and notice them, and a good starting point for TagFest participants.

For example, today I added the wordless tag (used by only 1 game) to Gent Stickman and its French translation. Now it is applied to 3 games.

(I now find myself wondering how one produces a French translation of a wordless game.)

Working on Hidnook’s list.

Merged ‘20’s’ and ‘1920’ into 1920s (also deleted ‘1900’, ‘story’, ‘short story’, ‘interactive fiction’, ‘vintage story’ and ‘vintage game’ and ‘interactive story’ but keeping ‘short’ and ‘vintage’ on Banneker Boulevard).

Deleted 60’s and 70’s tags from two games that already had 1960s and 1970s tags.

One of the 1984 games is inspired by 1984, so I’ll leave it, but merge the other into 1980s. 80s merged into 1980s. Only one game had 80s nostalgia, so I changed it to 1980s, whch other nostalgia games like Guilded Youth had.

Merged ‘90s’ into ‘1990s’

Merged ‘3d’ into ‘3d graphics’. Kept ‘3d movement’, as it includes games like my game Ether that involve moving in 3 (textual) directions.

Changed one game each from ‘8bit’ and ‘8-bit’ to ‘8bit graphic’ (didn’t bother banning each one).

Didn’t merge a-code and a-code source available as there are slight differences.

Changed one game (Mindfighter) from Abstract Concepts to larger tag ‘abstract’

Changed ‘save the world!’ from ‘absurdistic’ to ‘absurd’.

Merged ‘independent npcs’ and ‘active npc’ into ‘active NPCs’

‘Game adaptation’ seems to be for non-IF games converted to IF, so not merging with ‘adaptation’ (but I did merge ‘adaption’ earlier).

Added ‘adrift’ to all games with some version of adrift like ‘adrift 5.0’. Removed ‘adrift 4.0’ and ‘Adrift 4 game’ from one game each and changed to ‘adrift 4’. Merged ‘adrift game’ into ‘adrift’. Deleted ‘adfrift’ from one game.

‘Adult themes’ seems to include games that are not primarily erotic but have some serious content. ‘Adult’ seems to be primarily erotic, so I’m merging it into the longstanding ‘aif’ category.

Merged ‘alien intelligence’ to ‘aliens’. Merged ‘alien planet’ to ‘planets’. Added ‘aliens’ to the one ‘alien sidekick’ game but kept that tag. ‘alien culture’ was on floatpoint, it seems like a useful tag and could probably be added to Trading Punches, that one Tea ceremony game, and Worlds Apart. Merged ‘alien’ into ‘aliens’.

Deleted ‘alternate’ from Tale of the starweavers. (this game actually has dozens of tags, I’m going to delete all of them that are duplicates like ‘non linear’, ‘non-linear’, and ‘nonlinear’ but keep one) and delete tags that are just names of characters in the game and not used by any other game (like angelique vordan) and any other tags used by just this game (I won’t do that in general, just for this game which accounts for a big chunk of 1-use tags).

‘Alternate reality’ and ‘alternate history’ are slighty different, so won’t merge, but will merge ‘alternate universe’ into ‘alternate reality’. Merged ‘alternative history’ into ‘alternate history’.

Merged ‘ancient’ and ‘ancient history’ into ‘ancient world’.

Removed ‘animated art’, previously merged ‘animation’ and ‘animations’, and will leave other more specific tags.

Merged ‘character customization’ into ‘character creation’. Removed ‘customization’ from one game.

Deleted ‘interface fiction’ from Writing Program Five (it does seem intentionally different from interactive fiction but not in a way that will help tag search). Deleted ‘interactive-fiction’, ‘interactive text’, and ‘interactive fiction’ as those tags should not be necessary in IFDB.

Merged ‘children’s perspective’ into ‘child protagonist’.

Deleted ‘choicscript’ from one game which already had the right tag.

Deleted the 1-use tags ‘click games’, ‘clickers games’, ‘cookie click’, ‘cookie clicker’, ‘cookie clickers’, ‘games click’, ‘games clickers’, ‘games click’ and ‘cookie’ from Cookie Clickers and left ‘clicker’. Also deleted its use of the tag ‘game’. Left ‘click features’ in ‘Hercules–Birth of a hero’.

Deleted two wrong spellings of ClubFloyd Transcript from one game each, making sure right tag was there. Left the more specific tag ‘multiple clubfloyd transcripts’.

Deleted ‘comics’ and added ‘comic book character’ to one Batman game. Left the other comics alone as webcomics and comic strips have slightly different connotations.

Changed one game from ‘comittee’ tag to ‘committee’ tag.

Merged ‘cyoa with if-like model’ (which implies cyoa is not if) into 'cyoa with location-based world model)

Merged ‘date’ into ‘dating’ and made sure all ‘dating sim’ are tagged with ‘dating’ but didn’t merge the two as some games are incidentally about dating.

Merged ‘alcohol references’ into ‘alcohol’. Merged ‘alcohol abuse’ into ‘alcoholism’ and made sure both had the ‘alcohol’ tag as well. Deleted single use of ‘drinks’ tag. Deleted two uses of ‘drink’ tag. One was in ‘Anthropology’, which had several verbs as 1-time tags that don’t seem to help searches, so I deleted them (create, degenerate, drink, eat, evolve, frown, smile, socialize, wake up, walk). Deleted ‘drink’ and ‘alignment’ from ‘Do I date?’, both 1- or 2-off tags, and added ‘alcohol’.

Merged ‘drinking’ into ‘alcohol’.

Deleted ‘obnoxious’ and ‘twine story’ from ‘twine story’. Deleted ‘obscene’ from ‘a cockwork orange’.

Deleted all tags from Quest room: Hanon which were all proper nouns from the game and misspelled words like ‘pazzle’. Added back ‘puzzle’.

Deleted ‘we’ from ‘The Veeder’.

Merged ‘dungeon-crawl’ and ‘dungeon crawler’ into ‘dungeon crawl’.

Merged ‘e-mail’ into ‘email’.

Merged ‘gender freedom’, ‘gender-choice’, ‘gender choicee’ into ‘gender choice’.

Deleted one instance of ‘multiple coice’ in favor of ‘multiple choice’.

Merged ‘multiple ending’, ‘multipleending’, ‘multiplepaths’ into ‘multiple endings’. ‘Multiple paths’ seems slightly different but only two games have it so merging.

Merged ‘multiple players’ into ‘multiplayer’.

Merged ‘multiple playable characters’ and ‘multiple protaganists’ into ‘multiple protagonists’.

I’m not completely confident merging ‘multiple pov’ and ‘multiple protagonists’, as some games (especially @alyshkalia’s) might have different povs but single protagonist.

Merged ‘one room game’ and ‘single-room’ to ‘single room’.

Some of the ‘sexual’ tags are hard, because ‘sexual references’ includes Counterfeit Monkey, but ‘sexual content’ includes Cannery Vale and Varicella, and I wonder if people are using ‘sexual references’ as a gradation. I know you didn’t mention those Hidnook; as for the ‘unsurprisingly’ one I"ll merge that with ‘sexual content’.

Merged ‘sound fx’ with ‘sound effects’ and ‘soundtrack music’ with ‘soundtrack’. ‘Sound’ may not always imply ‘sound effects’ so I’m not merging those two right now but I am adding ‘sound’ to all ‘sound effects’ games and to all ‘music’ games.

‘Delayed text’ and ‘typing effect’ aren’t identical but I will add ‘delayed text’ to all ‘typing effect’ games (which is this list:

Ars Poetica

Charlie The Robot

I think the point being made was less that one-use tags are inherently a problem and more that a disproportionate number of one-use tags are unhelpful.

Yeah the main issue with some one-use tags is with people that tried spelling out sentences like “we are the best game” but it gets split up into “we” and “best” and so on. A few individual games are responsible for the majority of those tags.

Specific one use tags that describe content are great, which I think we all agree on.

Also, what do people prefer for LGBT, LGBTQ, LGBTQIA, etc.?

I personally vote for LGBTQ+, but I’ll take whatever people want. Right now, LGBT is the biggest.

I also vote for “LGBTQ+”.

Also in favor of LGBTQ+!

Brian, thank you so much for all your work to tidy these tags up.

Sorry if you already know this, but “Abstract Concepts” is the name of the studio/label that produced the game (rather than a description of its content).
(I think perhaps the only game actually released under that label, but others were planned. I discover The Classic Adventurer 02 has some history, p24 and thereabouts.)

Thank you @JTN , people double-checking my work is invaluable! I appreciate the time you spent looking, and I’ve re-added the tag.

I think that non-binary is the best. As noted elsewhere, I’m lost in the alphabet soup of the variety of non-binary people (I wisely use gradients in tackling sexuality and sexual ID/self-ID… )

a good alternative can be the good ol’ LGBT, perhaps with the + encompassing the rest of the alphabet soup…

Best regards from Italy,
