Sound and music in games

Ahahahaha you’re right, I was off by an order of magnitude. I was thinking of 2 kHz and 4 kHz. Oops.

My music software often prints the frequency in Hz, and doesn’t use commas or anything, so my memory lapsed on how many digits there were when I’m dialing in frequency bands.

For me, it’s usually my favourite place to have it  Or at least one where I think it has a higher chance of playing well, as I feel I can get away with it more before the player’s read anything.

Even though I was talking about book covers leaning abstract and all that, at least at the title page stage, the player hasn’t started building their specific version of the world in their head yet. So all of my Six and Ghosterington Night and Leadlight Gamma have short title tracks.

I generally don’t have an issue with cover art being specific, but one thing that does bug me is when a new edition of a favorite book changes the art.

Oh, I want to emphasize that I am not trying to preach The One Right Way and didn’t mean for my rules to be everyone’s rules, but they should at least be considerations. It’s probably fine to start a game immediately with music if you make sure the player knows there is sound before they play.

That’s a personal preference – but from a technical standpoint, many browsers will mute your game if there is immediate sound without user interaction first. Of course, if you don’t plan on having your game playable inside a browser, there is nothing to worry about on that front.

This. I hate getting jumpscared by sudden, unexpected sound!
