PunyComp 2025

When submitting a game, do you need to “publish” it first, or does that happen automatically? And once you submit it, is it public and anybody could find and play it, or does something happen after the submission period ends to make all the games publicly available?

Your project on Itch.io should be in the “Draft” or “Restricted” stage right up until the submission deadline, at which point you will have to manually change it to “Public”, in order for other people (including judges) to be able to play the game.

Edit: I was confidently wrong! See below.

Since the rules do not prohibit it, I assume when voting starts I can judge games which I have previously beta tested, as long as my judgment is based purely on the competition release and not my experience of the beta version. Is that reasonable? Should it be clarified in the rules?

Make your game page publically available when you submit the game to the compeitition, but choose the option to not have it show up for people searching or browsing for games - only people who know the URL will be able to get to your game page.

When the submission period ends, you can change it to fully public, showing up in searches etc.

The full rules for who can vote are on the comp page: “Anyone can be a judge. Authors are not allowed to vote on their own games, or try to influence the voting of others.”. This means beta testers can be judges, and so can comp organizers, friends and relatives of the author, etc.

“All games submitted must require the player character to interact with an animal in order to complete the game.”

Must be my bad English but… Is it allowed to have an animal player character interacting with a human NPC?

No.

Thx for clearing that up. I was inspired by the artwork and was taking the “interaction” bit literally (human PC touches cat NPC and they swap roles). I’ll shelf it for another comp and see if I can come up with another feline idea (I like cats).

I see nothing wrong with that idea.

I think Fredrik was simply ruling out the idea of the player being a cat which only interacts with humans.

The submission period for PunyComp 2025 has now ended, and we have seven eligible entries.

Now it’s time for judging. Please read the rules on judging/voting, play at least three of the games, and submit your votes.

Thanks!
