As usual, I am always open to controversy. It is all fun and games.
Thank you, fos1 (Jeff)
PS. Sorry for the late post. I have several docs and a hospital that had parking space for several new BMWs…
Okay here’s your controversy. Well, not much really. Why prohibit generated code ad not generated art? I’m not sure generated code detracts from the players’ experience the way generated text or art do. Just wondering. I don’t have a stake in it. I’ll be playing the games either way.
Just to check: how do you feel about parser games that have optional links that resolve to parser commands? (For example: the tutorial says you should GO NORTH and clicking that is equivalent to typing > GO NORTH, but you could also just type the command in yourself if you wanted to. There’s always still a > and free-input box, the links just put text into that box for people playing on mobile phones.)
I’m not gonna lie, I’m a little nervous about this year. I’ve been working on this entry for like two years now, but I’m not sure it qualifies. It’s absolutely a parser game, but it REALLY skirts the line on a several puzzles.
When writing this, I thought it was cool to push the boundaries of what was considered a “parser” game. Now I’m just nervous.
I am not the “parser” police. I’m not going to scrutinize game entries and send them to the cutting room floor. If it is a parser-based game (or not), the judges can sort it out.
Speaking as someone who is going to try to submit a classic parser based entry if I enter, I like this approach & the creativity it’s likely to encourage!
I’m excited for the competition! I have a game of my own that’s kind of weird and may get mixed reactions, and I have a game I coded for someone I met on this forum (going by DC for now) that was 100% designed and written by him (then coded up by me). I think this will be a lot of fun!
I have but TALP comes first. Sometimes I’ve had a good idea for the potential ParserComp game writing TALP stuff. But I guess there is no worst time to have a potentially good idea.
On reading the rules a bit closer, I’ll have to withdraw my submission. I did use quite a bit of AI generated code in making this game, and for the life of me I can’t remember what I wrote and what the AI built in.
That’s OK; its going to be a great comp and I’m looking forward to playing some games!
I have an unfinished game that I started years ago. Looking through the old code, the map is dated 2016, the z5 file is dated 2020 and the latest version of the source code is dated 2021, so I had clearly been working on this on and off over some period of time. This was long before I started participating in competitions and releasing games publicly. I think it’s about time that I finished it off.
It was originally written in Inform 6 using the standard library. I’ve now ported it to PunyInform and started cleaning it up. I’ll have to play through the game to refresh my memory, then make lots of improvements.
The game didn’t have a prologue or player description, so I did a little work on the story last night. I can’t say too much about it, and it’s subject to change anyway, but, at this stage, I can reveal that the story is inspired by Captain Cutter’s Treasure, but it’s not a sequel.
