Okay here’s your controversy. Well, not much really. Why prohibit generated code ad not generated art? I’m not sure generated code detracts from the players’ experience the way generated text or art do. Just wondering. I don’t have a stake in it. I’ll be playing the games either way.

Just to check: how do you feel about parser games that have optional links that resolve to parser commands? (For example: the tutorial says you should GO NORTH and clicking that is equivalent to typing > GO NORTH, but you could also just type the command in yourself if you wanted to. There’s always still a > and free-input box, the links just put text into that box for people playing on mobile phones.)

Generated art is only for the cover image.

As long as the game is parser based and primarily text input and output.

I’m not gonna lie, I’m a little nervous about this year. I’ve been working on this entry for like two years now, but I’m not sure it qualifies. It’s absolutely a parser game, but it REALLY skirts the line on a several puzzles.

When writing this, I thought it was cool to push the boundaries of what was considered a “parser” game. Now I’m just nervous.

I’ll pass this competition, not only for the lack of time, but also for my incompatibility with itch’s nosyness.

Best regards from Italy,
dott. Piergiorgio.

I am not the “parser” police. I’m not going to scrutinize game entries and send them to the cutting room floor. If it is a parser-based game (or not), the judges can sort it out.

Speaking as someone who is going to try to submit a classic parser based entry if I enter, I like this approach & the creativity it’s likely to encourage!

Well, Gruescript is allowed, and it doesn’t have any typed text input?

I’m confused. This appears to contradict,

Not everyone is an artist. In that case we will allow AI-generated images, but you must acknowledge the source of the images

Parser police, arrest this man
He talks in Twine, he links like a chain
He likes literary hyper-text

Parser police, arrest this girl
Her story-based IF is making me feel ill
And we miss the puzzles

This is what you get
This is what you get
This is what you get
When you mess with Zork

Ty! It’s definitely a parser game, and yeah it has plenty of parser-y puzzles, but… well… no spoilers.

I’m excited for the competition! I have a game of my own that’s kind of weird and may get mixed reactions, and I have a game I coded for someone I met on this forum (going by DC for now) that was 100% designed and written by him (then coded up by me). I think this will be a lot of fun!

Geez, @mathbrush was quick off the mark. He’s already entered two games. I haven’t even thought about it.

I am so amazed and gratified that ParserComp 2026 has taken off so well!

In just a couple of days, eight gamers have joined, and there are already two submissions!!!

I am working on the challenge coin (award medallion). I will post an image as it comes together.

I’m jazzed. Thank you!

I have but TALP comes first. Sometimes I’ve had a good idea for the potential ParserComp game writing TALP stuff. But I guess there is no worst time to have a potentially good idea.

On reading the rules a bit closer, I’ll have to withdraw my submission. I did use quite a bit of AI generated code in making this game, and for the life of me I can’t remember what I wrote and what the AI built in.

That’s OK; its going to be a great comp and I’m looking forward to playing some games!

I have now thought about it.

I have an unfinished game that I started years ago. Looking through the old code, the map is dated 2016, the z5 file is dated 2020 and the latest version of the source code is dated 2021, so I had clearly been working on this on and off over some period of time. This was long before I started participating in competitions and releasing games publicly. I think it’s about time that I finished it off.

It was originally written in Inform 6 using the standard library. I’ve now ported it to PunyInform and started cleaning it up. I’ll have to play through the game to refresh my memory, then make lots of improvements.

The game didn’t have a prologue or player description, so I did a little work on the story last night. I can’t say too much about it, and it’s subject to change anyway, but, at this stage, I can reveal that the story is inspired by Captain Cutter’s Treasure, but it’s not a sequel.
