Must play horror games?

Ah, maybe this is a better topic for general? I’m not Exactly new to playing games! But I feel like, oh gosh, like a gameplaying block? There’s sooooo much stuff out there! I don’t know what to get started back up with, like what’s popular with a general game player isn’t the same as what’s popular within the community, what’s like The Games to play?

Elevated, moving horror, great writing, novel-like, a long read, a bit heavy but not nihilistic.

Heavy media/sound, great spooky vibes, a bit “creepy pasta”.

Absurd “Exquisite Corpse”, a bit of everything, parser, every room is a new game - many have entered but few have returned.

Fun, campy horror:

Bogeyman is one I still need to check out. I haven’t played my father’s long, long legs in ages! I really dig that authors like creepypasta horrorstory writing too.

Omg, I’m preeetty sure I’ve played shade before too, but adding these all to a list! Thank you!

Recent gothic horror game with cool emotion-based mechanic:

I always think of Coloratura as more sci-fi dominant, but it’s definitely horror too and a great game in any case. You play a non-human-comprehending entity that’s on the loose:

One Eye Open is a goopy horror game with slobbery Silent-Hill-like monsters:

I can’t dispassionately say the following is ‘must play’ as I wrote it, but I noticed you like RPGs. Leadlight is like survival horror meets CRPG meets 8-bit text adventure, set in a girls school:

I also made a commercial version of it with Inform called Leadlight Gamma

.Radi44setup.exe - Google Drive

An old horror game.

Have you got some info about this Radi44? I think people would be wary of running an exe file with no info about what’s inside.

It’s mentioned in the blurb for Cragne Manor (which was a tribute to it), but no-one so far has explicitly suggested Anchorhead, a huge horror game which despite being 26 years old is still frequently ranked among the best IF games of all time.

At the risk of being the person who bangs only one drum (the Cannery Vale drum) I’d recommend Cannery Vale. It’s my favorite horror IF, marvelously surreal and metafictional with really interesting puzzles that don’t feel like puzzles because they’re so tied into the nature of the game. It’s a choice-based game that takes a few hours to get through.

Also seconding Coloratura, though you may need the walkthrough in several parts (I remember I did when I played). It’s not as “horror” as some of the other games mentioned here, but it helps to fill the eldritch alien xenofiction-shaped hole in my heart.

Edit: Actually, I might have just played the Twine version of Coloratura instead. I’m not sure.

Bogeyman is great. I also have to recommend Lime Ergot. It’s not standard horror. More like bizarro horror. Very short and incredible.

3rding coloratura, it’s great cuz you only see it as horror if you step outside the POV character’s understanding.

speaking of which, Eat Me is horrifying in a very similar way

Adding another Chandler Groover game—Bring Me a Head! is a short comedy horror game that I quite enjoyed.

I don’t think I’d be exaggerating if I said that Eat Me literally changed my understanding of what horror can be.

I suppose a computer virus is a kind of horror game for real life.

If you’re into body horror, I’ve always been fond of Liz England’s Her Pound of Flesh.
