I still tinker with the Magic 8-Ball every time there is an update to the public IFDB data. It has now been updated with the September 2026 data and had some tweaks applied that make it able to offer recommendations (if not necessarily great ones) for just about every work listed on IFDB.
Since the overall level of tagging has been on the increase over the last couple of years, it’s doing a better job than ever before of recommending matches that aren’t necessarily well-known, and of offering a mix of recommendations based on different types of similarity. The biggest issue affecting match quality right now is tag coverage. Some newer tags, such as prompted conversation are only applied to a small fraction of the games to which they should apply. When that’s the case, the matching algorithm won’t (i.e. can’t) make the connection to games that have the same feature but are missing the tag. There’s no fix for this other than tagging up games; perhaps another TagFest event, in which people could nominate tags for group attention, would help.
I’ve been making use of the recommendations myself for some time now, and I’d say that it’s working reasonably well overall. If anyone would like to try it for other games, I’d welcome the test. Just post the name (and other distinguishing data like author and/or publication year if there is more than one game with the same name), and I’ll post the corresponding recommendations.
