By the way, you can find thousands of free-to-play works on IFDB, which is our database of games. Here is a filtered list of those tagged choice-based, for example. There are also (more of, I believe) parser-based games there like text adventures. That is to say, you don’t need to buy games on Steam to see what this community has to offer.

@Hidnook Thanks for sharing that link. I randomly chose a couple titles - The Den, Bee, and 16 Ways to Kill a Vampire at McDonalds - and gave them a try.

They were all quite fun! And it was interesting to see the type of interactive features they offered, like inline text expansion and being able to click on keywords within the story text as another method of information gathering and exploration.

I’m starting to understand what folks here are expecting from IF platforms, especially when it comes to text-to-choice ratios, more interactivity, and lower barrier to entry for readers (no login required to play). I also started reading about TADS. It looks well-suited to allow authors to build parser-driven IF worlds and distribute/host a compiled game - very cool.

Users are no longer required to login to play free stories on NovelCrafted.

For paid books, it is up to the author to decide how much of the story can be played for free.

On the next update (very soon), I’ll change the system so that new signups have writing privileges by default, and upgrade who already signed up as well.
