IFComp 2025 Teaser Thread

With intents to enter now opening, IFComp season is officially upon us! And I’m curious what sorts of things to expect when September comes. So this is a thread to hint at what you’re working on and get everyone’s appetites worked up over the next few months.

I have three WIPs at the moment and I’m hoping at least one of them will be ready in time. Maybe even all three!

Ever since the original Adventure, magic in parser IF has tended to involve verbs. My first WIP is based on the question: what if magic was nouns instead?

The second one was pitched to my advisor as part of my doctoral thesis.

The third one takes a famous piece of IF and inverts it, turning the original player character into the NPC antagonist, while you play as the various enemies and obstacles from the original game.

  • It’s not a sequel, but it’s not new either.
  • Its setting shares a name with a defunct Boston spice company.
  • It happens 82 years after the Troubles of 2163, but on a different celestial body.

One of mine takes a not-so-known game by a well-known author and forum member, and (with their permission) just adds a hella lot of ideas and content.

The other is not quite that.

It’s unlikely either of them will end up being released this year, but just in case I manage to pull them off, you know…

Two WIPs. Whichever I don’t finish will go into introcomp, I think? One is a rougelite where you delve into catacombs to fight demons and the other is a psychological horror piece where you’re trapped in your house in 1980s Western Australia as a toxic dust storm messes with your brain.

Until you open the box, the cat is both alive and dead. I’ll be submitting a game that…exists (or doesn’t—find out at IFComp!).

… OK, @Encorm. Well done. It’s been four days since I first saw that, and I have discovered in that time that I must learn the context.

I think it’s clear. Encorm is making a game about two Spidermans.

I think you’ll find it’s Spidersman - it’s like Attorneys General.

Well, that’s some extra motivation for us to try and finish on time!

I think I’ve already mentioned what I’m working on for IFComp elsewhere, but here’s a hint anyway (based more on the cover image than the narrative):

  • I’ve bought a piñata.
  • I’ve learned to make rope.
  • I’m looking into whether I can get an actual Polaroid taken/printed for this one.

Actually, Spiders-Man is someone else entirely.

I registered my entry today. It’s never too early. I’m going to send this about three weeks from now, too, so everyone here actually gets their entry in before the deadline. It’s the same as last year, but all the same, anyone who missed last year may still think it’s September 1st.

My prospective entry’s title is five letters long.

OMG, I can’t believe that I really submitted my contribution. I am investigating the question of how much pop culture content an average mail carrier can tolerate without suffering mental damage.

Just a dash - one wouldn’t like to overdo it!

@Loressa - sorry!

sometimes I should dust off that old idea of mine, an 700s/Napoleonic era espionage story… (the one genre where wearables matters without doffing…)

Best regards from Italy,
dott. Piergiorgio.
