IF Archive tagging volunteers wanted

At the beginning of the the UK Online Safety Act thread, I wrote:

Our next step is for our volunteers to go through our entire game list and tag games which the UK regulations restrict. Once that’s done, we can lift the directory block and replace it with a tag-based block.

We’ve been working on that for a month now. We have made progress. However, the end is not yet in sight. At a very rough estimate, our volunteers have looked at about 15% of the games on the Archive. And a lot of those are marked “not sure, need to take a closer look”.

It would be very helpful to have some more people tag in and help with the load. Er, no pun intended.

We’re using a simple tag system. You can read it here. We’re not trying to apply fine-grained content warnings for every thing that might be in a game. (Crowdsourcing on IFDB is a better platform for that.) Rather, we’re trying to tag the broad categories that the UK law – and perhaps future laws in the EU, etc – might care about restricting.

If you’re interested in helping: DM me here or email me at erkyrath@eblong.com.

  • You must be at least 18 years old
  • You must be willing to join the IFTF volunteer Slack, which is where we’re coordinating the effort

Thanks!

Also, to pre-empt new rounds of complaints:

This is a decision made by the IFTF as per the advice from their lawyer regarding the aforementioned act. They are following this advice out of an abundance of caution as being hit with the fine violations would screw over the entire foundation.

It has been made extremely clear by the IFTF that they don’t plan on changing their decision. And, generally, contesting legal advice or telling people not to follow it on the public internet is not a good move!

In any case, I can’t volunteer given all the crap in my life right now. But I hope you do!
