Earlier today, Damon Wakes mentioned that the rooms in Jumpscare Manor are taken from a Clue/Cluedo board. The same is true for The Enigma of the Old Manor House (though the protagonist doesn’t know the proper names, to hide the inspiration a little: they call it a “Sunroom” instead of a “Conservatory”, for example).
Since two points make a line, I’m now wondering if there are any others out there. How many could there be?
Without thinking about it, Cluedo is probably my go-to default idea for rooms in any manor/house game. Kitchens and lounges are not surprising for any house, but I suppose it’s the fact that I would then instantly think of stuff like a Conservatory or, more fancifully, a Ballroom, that shows Cluedo lurking.
My second default list would be much less shared, and overlaps a lot with Cluedo’s anyway, which is the manor tiles in the 1985 board game Chill: Black Morn Manor. The image of one board layout below looks like one of my visions of Cragne Manor, including outdoor areas. I got the idea to do a music room from that tile in Chill:
Reliques of Tolti-Aph has a whole, somewhat discongruous random-dungeon-crawl segment which is based on a board game, but I can’t seem to find which at the moment…
No way! I had this game when I was a kid and I never met anyone who knows it! It was called “Hell House” (Höllenhaus) in Germany. Unfortunately my copy got lost. We were too little to really understand the rules, but just looking through the cards of the monsters was so creepy and awesome when I was a kid. Can you maybe post some cards? Nevermind, I found pictures online.
While The Lab is my long-standing first room for Inform test programs, The Conservatory was #2 for a while. But “Conservatory” is twice as long as “Parlor”, so it was supplanted. The Parlor isn’t a real Cluedo room, but it sounds like one. The Conservatory, Billiard Room, Study, and Library sometimes get used if I need more (but I’ve paid no attention to following Cluedo’s map).
