Hi everyone! My name is Lorenzo Pelosini, I’m the author of Demons in High Heels and a Game Garden veteran. My manager just directed me to your community. I am currently looking for new writing gigs for the next months. Do you guys know where I could start from?
Thank you!!
By writing gigs, do you mean being paid for your writing or doing non-paid works for fun/exposure?
Not a whole lot of paying gigs in the text-only neck of the woods, I’m afraid.
Yeah - Choice of Games and their Hosted Games program are the only really monetized things in our space, and those are typically multiple-hundreds-of-words projects so not really gig-friendly. There are a lot of awesome things about IF and this community, but it’s very much an amateur scene.
I believe Failbetter have in the past have commissioned authors to contribute content for Fallen London, although I don’t know how publicly advertised as a “gig” it was, it might just be them asking people they know well to partner with them.
Similarly Inkle has collaborated with authors like Meg Jayanth for enormous projects like 80 Days, though I think that’s more of a partnership for a full-length title rather than gig-work again.
Failbetter and Inkle can likely be thought of as independent game studios, so it might be worth following their blogs or social media in case they do make any calls for authors.
As said, Choice of Games is the most open company as far as anyone can submit a CV and pitch ideas for new games to them at any time. They have mainstream and romance branches of their brand. As also mentioned, they’re usually looking for full-length novel-sized games so less of a gig and more of a commitment to write for them. CoG is structured more like a publishing house with a large stable of independent authors.
On the other hand, if you’re looking for non-paid writing, there’s plenty in this community. You could write interactive fiction to share or submit to competitions (some of which have prizes, cash or otherwise). Sometimes authors look for collaborations as well, such as @mathbrush recently, so if you want to contribute to something larger instead of creating something entirely from scratch, you definitely can.
