I beat Stationfall. In other news, I got to play games this morning.

I have submitted my French Entry
Not fully happy with some parts, but overall I feel good about it. I got to test out new code and make new kinds of puzzles on Twine ! (well new to me, at least - and I’ll def reuse that code for some other projects…)

ONTO THE NEXT ONE!

I’ve been trying to see how quickly I can narrow down my walk, though hopefully I never have to actually sprint it to not miss something- but what takes about twenty five minutes to walk along can be brought down to 10 minutes as of yesterday, and 7 as of today. That’s without the extra weight of my drinks though (1.7L total) since those got drunken today. That’s including the several flights of stairs I have to leg up like a maniac.

I realized that my current nail polish colour is the perfect Welcome to Nightvale shade. Super fun! I just redid them since it was getting a little worse for wear- it usually lasts me about a week before my nails grow out enough the gap is noticeable and irritates me.

ETA: Popcorn eating creature hours.

This story starts out sad but gets better.

We had an ice storm, and all my huge beautiful hundreds-of-years-old trees are breaking under the weight of the ice. Huge limbs coming down, whole trees falling. Every 10 seconds, there’s a huge Crrraacck… BANG as a tree breaks. This may seem normal to those of you who live in cold climates, but for our Texas trees, this is not normal at all.

Anyway, it’s’s awful and sad and I was sitting in my office watching trees break and crying a little. My dog (who looks like she’s made up of spare parts of dogs) has a stuffed rooster that is her favorite toy. You don’t want to mess with the stuffed rooster, because it is hers and she will object. But when I was sitting watching the destruction of ancient beautiful giants and crying, she brought me the rooster and put it on my foot. And it helped me feel better, because the best gift is something you really want to keep for yourself.

Thank goodness you’re all safe, and that you have such a sweet puppy to keep you company. I’m so sorry about the trees. Is there perhaps a way some of the wood could be salvaged to make into a memento? So grateful that you’re warm indoors, falling trees (and lines as sometimes happens up here with ice storms) can be quite dangerous.

My condolences on the trees.

If you get far enough north and cold enough, the cold can actually freeze the sap inside the trees, causing it to expand until… CRACK!!!

It can sound like a gunshot at times.

It has to get very cold for this to happen though, as the sugars and minerals in the sap significantly lower it’s freezing point.

New hiding spot uncovered! There’s a door that offshoots from an already ill used corner (on the way to my usual corner where I do my therapy sessions, though the lack of a plug in a nice spot there (it’s a bit in the way, but present, with a few options, though two of them are in an echoing area) and the annoyance of some dance students having found it as a wide space to practice in has made me start hunting around for alternative hiding spots, since my usual one was flooded recently (and also lacks a plug.)

Anyways, the maintenance tunnel looks straight of a horror flick- covered in dirt, dust, debris, lost chairs, ripped up signs, on unfinished steps: but if you ignore that (and the ominously broken elevator), the small offshoot from the main hall (typically ignored due to the doors lack of presence/there’s not much down here for anyone to investigate unless you work in the labs that require clearance, or got very lost when finding the alternative exit for what appear to be rehearsal studios that more often are exited on the other side: almost none of the lockers here are claimed, which is a good indication of foot traffic too, and the busted elevator, too.) There are a few chairs tossed here- the way professors put up for people who are waiting for long periods, though lately, with changes in security shifts and the lack of professor offices here- I bet they’re here for the one officer who patrols this lab area at night time proper, or the rare student who comes down to the lab to wait to get a question addressed. They’re a bit distressed.

Testing the hand sanitizer dispenser shows it works- but is very full, and there’s no goop spillage on the ground, so people don’t use it too often. However, the chair in front of the broken elevator is hiding two electrical plugs behind it, both of which work. The chair across from me is up beside a radiator, that seems to be out of service, as is the fire alarm there- but it’s not a bad hiding spot. Quiet, no echoes, electrical access, a chair, low traffic- no one here but the laboratory staff hiding away for the most part and the very rare lost student: it’s a nice place to set up and get some work done. Thrilled to find it.

On a day when my legs aren’t so messed up, (my ankle has been giving me trouble as of late) I want to try to climb the stairs upwards, rather than just descending further into the dead end of the tunnels. The signage on the wall only points to the swimming pool and less popular gym which is en route to where I normally conduct therapy, which is located to an exit connected to the lower floors of the engineering building and upstairs to the laboratory area for the biological sciences. I wonder what’s upstairs from the maintenance tunnels. I’ve explored the school ruthlessly, but I never knew that flight of stairs existed. If I had to hazard a guess, it may be a shortcut to either the older building that only the engineers really have classes in, or to the wing where I once sat and had lunch that was abandoned because it was so close to the professor’s wing and had little of interest otherwise. Curious as to where it goes!

ETA: I figured it out. From peering into some of the rooms here: this area looks mainly to be a place for a few highly specialized labs and costume storage. That’s why the rehearsal doors are so ill used: this is the ‘backstage’ area. I know for a fact these rooms exit out on a nearby corridor of the school that is very busy (not too far from the clinic) and this must be one of those ‘in case of fire’ exits people otherwise ignore. A busy area would have far more claimed lockers, cleaner maintenance hallways, better signage, more goop around the dispenser for hand sanitizer, a working elevator, more matching furniture/chairs placed not just in the corners (they’d be by the doors), and so on. The working key card machine must be the reader for the back of the theatre.

The power went out right after I wrote that post, and just now came back on 9 hours and about 50 tree limbs later.

Yes, it’s sounded like a shooting range all day. The damage is horrific. It’ll take us days just to clear everything off our road.

My husband is a woodworker, and that’s the up side of this calamity. We’ll have tons of black walnut and cherry and oak for him to make beautiful things from. Also, we’ll have years’ worth of firewood. Yay.

My sister really wants to be a playtester for my SpringThing game, but wanted some intro games to start with. I sent her The Dreamhold and Lost Pig, because they’re closest to the kind of gameplay that will be in my game, and they’re also beginner-friendly.

I plan to send some other games her way to expand the possibilities (Photopia, some choice-based titles, etc), but will probably do that after she’s comfortable enough to help with testing.

Shout out to everyone who helped get online tools working. She’s the polar opposite of me; I need offline copies of everything, but her lifestyle requires online alternatives.

I felt like I was going bonkers yonkers in the classroom, but it turns out some of the ivy was knocking against the glass consistently with the winds. Very reassuring to figure that out. It sounded like someone was trying to break in. It’s quite chilly- we’re getting exploded by the polar vortex this weekend, but I’m wearing a cute little collared sweater I’m quite fond of (it’s cream, with poet sleeves, a white ruffle edged peter pan collar, a peekaboo accent at the back of the neck with a pearl clasp) and planning on picking up a popsocket after class.

Haven’t slept well today for reasons, so I can’t do much coding.

Spent my time planning out algorithms instead, to make sure I don’t lose much time on my SpringThing game.

It’s really chilly out, so I’m bundled up in preparation- but happy that at least one of my morning classes is online. We had a bit of spare time while we were waiting for the audio to set up properly in the theatre for the kids Zooming in from there, so we started talking about pigeons- and my prof was delighted by the picture of the pigeon following me onto transit awhile ago that I shared. It was kind of funny, she called me Snow White ‘or whichever Disney princess has a little bird on her shoulder.’

I forgot the library only opens at 10… so I went and got myself a snack while I wait

I love those little moments of unexpected free time. It’s why I like waiting in line while the cashier helps an old geezer count his exact change. I see other people throwing annoyed looks at each other, the cashier and the old geezer, while I’m standing there enjoying those blissfully empty minutes when the world around me is reduced to one thing: wait.

I hope to be that old geezer once. I’ll keep my pockets filled with loose change. I’ll teach those young’uns about the art of waiting, if they like it or not.

Friend was at a used book store and sent me this, asking if I wanted it:

Of course I did want it. It was apparently $3.

That’s the best sort of friend. I still have a nicer old-fashioned garlic press a friend got me at a garage sale years ago. I think cost them $0.50.

Having a lovely gametime meal / dinner of coleslaw, pizza (with spinach! One of my favourite toppings) and having scoffed down a handful or two of popcorn. That’s a great night. Also finally rescued my cup of coffee from the microwave a bit ago, so I have a nice warm drink too.

Goncharov TTRPG night is lots of fun, as ever. Here’re two doodles of Andrey Daddano, one of the guys I write.
