What's one positive/neutral thing that's happened today?

My last jam entry got last place. Maybe I should try the really bad IF jam?

I got lots of really unexpected progress on one of my many WIPs, which has been really satisfying. Although, I still doubt I’ll be able to make it completed by IFComp. But fingers crossed!

@SomeOne2 I hear ya. My current WIP is in Twine/Sugarcube, and is going really well, but I just wish it’d go faster. I just spent 30 minutes tracking down a bug. But, at least it’s fixed now and I can move on.

For me, working on a WIP is as engrossing as reading a really good book. It definitely triggers dopamine release in my bioware.

I wish it was the case for me as well, lol. For me dragging a project across the finish line feels more like a cross between a marathon and a chore. XD

Forgot it was Memorial weekend when I went to the DMV today. But it was the last major thing on my list to do before moving.
Now I just need to finish my suitcase… and hope it’s under the weight limit :grimacing:

Do you ever get to where you think you’re done working on your WIP for the day and then, that night, when you should be falling asleep, you’re coding in your head, and you suddenly realize where a subtle error is coming from, and you have to get up to check it on the computer, and sure enough, you were right!?

Asking for a friend…

Yes! Happens so often…
That or finally have the breakthrough of a coding error in the middle of the night, falling asleep, then forgetting everything in the morning :sob:

I just had a really weird but cool new idea that fits perfectly with one of my WIPs… I’ll have to try it out

Reading the ALAN manual; also, I have a copy of Steve Meretsky’s 1995 notes on coding in ZIL.

I’m finding ALAN code to be very approachable. I’m also interested in Hugo, but haven’t come across a nice manual like ALAN has.

Spontaneously decided to bash out a cover a bit before dinner. I ended up recording drums after dinner, and then guitar and bass because why not, lol. Tomorrow I’ll have to record vocals and tambourine.

Got my first sub-330 when I stepped on the scales today. My Goal of 320 by year’s end I set as my new year’s resolution is looking to have been very pessimistic.

Also, the weather is actually pleasant for once. cool enough my AC can actually keep my room comfortable, but not so cool the two smart for its own good AC is constantly turning itself on and off with the result of my room yoyoing between comfortable and stuffy… Also, the humidity is low enough I haven’t had to empty the AC’s drainage bucket today.

Finished that cover. Since I created a Neocities website for my cartoon band, I’m thinking I should make an “outtakes” page where I can put goofy covers in variable bitrate mp3 for people to download if they want. XD

Hello,

My positive I want to share is getting the core of my go to location routine up and running in Inform 6. It was a struggle against forgotten (), missed things to change in copy and paste. I still need to test it versus a more complex map, but I think it is flexible enough for my needs.

A special moment of happiness was when I found the objectloop over the compass directions in DM 4 - it allowed me to replace 11 if-statements with an elegant-looking objectloop.

Of course, this all forced me to create stubs, which I actually wanted to avoid, but, oh well.

Still, this made me happy.

We had a bad storm last night that left a lot of standing water in our backyard. Two beautiful ducks dropped in for a visit this afternoon and they paused for a photo.

PS. Story line: Two sitting ducks…

My SSDI benefits haven’t been Trumped yet and today is payday, so my bills are taken care of and I have food and a roof over my head for another month. Also, thanks to a bout of insomnia, I was alert enough when my direct deposit went through around 5 this morning to take care of my bills right away instead of leaving them for later this afternoon and to get my big grocery order in early enough for delivery at a decent time today instead of tomorrow, so I have shredded cheese to add to my bowl of rotini and beans for lunch, potatoes to mash for supper tonight after several nights in a row of rice.

And since cutting my tea consumption in half has been going well, I was able to use the money that would have otherwise gone to refilling my tea chest towards some craft supplies. including a couple skeins of yarn, most of a rainbow of pony beads(got 2 500-count packs each of red and yellow, black and blue and pink, but they only had one pack of green in stock and orange and purple are out of stock… really need the orange and purple and a second pack of green for a beading project I’ve planned, but I figured, might as well get what’s in stock since those colors could go out of stock by the time the missing colors are restocked… also, a pack of heart beads and one of those small craft looms designed for using fabric loops to make pot holders, though I have ideas beyond that for the loom.

Also splurged for some ice cream and tired of the limited selction for gallon tubs, I bought 3, 3-pint tubs, one each of strawberry, rainbow sherbet, and cookie dough.

Anyways, I’m off to finsh making lunch.

After worrying that I didn’t have enough ideas and it would turn out to be a short scene, I wrote the next scene of my Twine project, and it came out 8 pages long.

Hello,

My good thing today was actually kind of a continuation of yesterday.

During the commute to work and during breaks, writing on my smartphone, I improved my GO TO routine, changing a core routine drastically.

My approach is to use a mapgrid of objects linked to the rooms and use the distance between objects on the mapgrid to find the right exit. Yesterday, I already realized that there will quickly be cases where things are ambiguous ehich in turn makes creating the mapgrid difficult, as it needs to be designed manually. So, I added a z-axis to the mapgrid. Thinking about it, I realized that it made the task of designing the mapgrid even more difficult.

This morning, I figured out how to solve the problem. The routine niw has three phases: phase 1 applies if x,y don’t match and z is not 0. During that phase, the routine only tries to reach z 0, which is basically ground level. In phase 2, the routine tries to reach the correct x,y coordinates on z = 0. And phase 3 is getting to the right z after having reached the right x,y coordinates.

This change allows me to stack linear clusters (which ignore dead ends as the routine ignores dead ends as well) on one x,y coordinate without worrying about different clusters being ambiguous. That way, I can elegantly reduce the number of points on z = 0, which makes it easier to create a reliable mapgrid.

I just copied the altered routine and after dealing with some small oversights, I tested it with my current mapgrid which doesn’t use z yet, and at least that worked just as fine as with the old routine.

So, I think I can consider the structure of the routine as final and create a mapgrid for that.

So, a big advance done. And on a day where I was at work (and we have 12 hour shifts at work (^_^;; ).

Yours,
Deathworks
