What's one positive/neutral thing that's happened today?

Ah, I was noticing that some UK websites hadn’t updated and wondered whether it was a bank holiday!

(Is it for anything in particular?)

Not really, it’s just the May Day Bank Holiday - happens on the first Monday of May every year.

Repainted my nails- alternating cool, translucent pink with blue iridescent sparkles and a purpley-green silver chrome.

I start my creative retreat today! Well, I say retreat but I’m still at home, doing the family stuff. But that’s okay! I just get to not be at work, and work on whatever creative projects I want to. Or go and watch Furiosa with a big bucket of popcorn.

I’m hopefully turning this extreme blessing into some IF. Maybe an IF Comp entry. Hopefully a good one!

I’ve had a really bad couple of months, but had a bit of good news today.

First, I unexpectedly lost my remote software development job at the end of March. While at that job I had moved to a location where there isn’t much local dev work, leaving me now struggling to find a job to pay the bills.

On top of that, just as I snagged a couple interviews I got hit by a kidney stone and surgery that put me out of action for two weeks.

Today I got a bit of good news, in that I managed to pass to the final interview loop for a dev role at Amazon. The downside is that it may be up to a month before that interview happens and it is certainly no sure thing, so I need to continue my job hunt.

I finally have my sense of taste back after being sick! (Not with COVID, just a very stuffy nose.) The sun-dried tomato pasta @EJoyce made tonight was a religious experience.

Having a maths assessment. Uuurgh. Luckily, I also have Music studies, an English assessment on creative writing (in which I’m 50% of the way to being able to write a piece of IF for), and Computer Science. Oh, and then swordfighting practice for a scene in the school play’s production. You know, good times.

Just spent the last hour shelling boiled peanuts. Yum.

I once played twelve roles in a play staged in a large tent at the university I attended in the early 70s.

I don’t think I had half that many lines…

All I can think of when you say that is The Thirty-Nine Steps

Well, now I have done some choreography with the swordfight, which involves rolling with a sword and throwing myself violently to the floor when I get knocked out, but hey, that’s what happens when you get Peter Pan in a Wendy & Peter production!

I have made a wardrobe switch from full-length leggings to capri leggings as a nod to May being here. Still in a big cardigan and under a blanket but it’s a small step towards feeling like summer’s not a million miles away!

My friend Hazel is reviewing for an exam she has tomorrow, and the slides she was looking at were total dogwater. I was able to help her with some of the antibiotics mechanism stuff- and helped to clarify what was going on with the peptidyl transferase and APE sites which was really exciting, especially since I had guessed the context of the problem before she confirmed it was indeed, the case. Yay! I love being helpful and it’s always cool when you can jump in and surprise people with secret kitty lore.

I’ve finally nailed down a system that helps me with staying hydrated enough at my silly little new desk setup. I have the filtered water in a large jug off to my side to refill from, and then I have my steel insulated 1L water bottle full of ice to chill it from room temperature, and then I have a little wineglass that’s light enough for me to hold without aggravating some existent injuries right now that helps warms it up a little, especially when cupping it to cradle the glass in my hand, so that it’s not too cold, (since getting water at just the right temperature to drink in the summer is an annoying task at best), and this way I can sip and write without sighing over perpetual fridge ice runs or scrambling to refill small glasses of water.

Similarly solved an issue I was having in terms of constantly dropping or gripping things kind of painfully while going up and down the stairs (which would lead to bedtime procrastination, because I didn’t want to have to go through the ordeal of packing up) by simply throwing everything into an over the shoulder large purse I have, and then it’s a lot easier to grab and go, reduces the overwhelm of clutter/trying to balance or stack items in my hands (which are unreliable at best), and a lot safer for me when my ankles / wrists are being unreliable because I can hold onto the guard rail and catch myself if I fall with the bag over my shoulder.

An absolute win on both counts.

Swapped over to my lightest fountain pens also because of hand/arm injuries, and it makes it a lot easier to write with without being in pain. Got another bottle of painkillers in as well, since I was running low.

A female painted bunting hit our window today. So Tom went out and got her and we worried over her for a while. We don’t have giant windows, and we have sparkly decals all over them to prevent birds hitting them, but no matter what we do, we still get some birds hitting windows.

Anyway, this all seems awful, but it’s OK!. She was in shock, and Tom held her and warmed her, and we got the dropper out and gave her some water, and after about 30 minutes she had recovered enough from the head-bonk to fly away and we’ve seen her at the feeder since.

Also, got through an entire first rewrite of my WIP game, which was a disaster and probably still is a disaster, but is hopefully less so now.

I managed to go spelunking in my cupboards, found some SATA cables, and finally added my old NAS drives to my desktop. Backups, baby!

In exchange, I got hayfever from all the dust I cleaned out.

Lighter mornings mean earlier wakeups and hence getting stuff done earlier. Not even 12:30pm and I’ve already got the bulk of today’s work done, so might be able to finish early today

Don’t forget to keep up with electrolyte balance. I ended up in an emergency room “dehydration” even though I had been drinking a LOT of water. The doc explained that even though I was hydrated, my salt balance was way out of whack.

I didn’t injure myself cleaning up glass after the place got trashed last night- broken plates, fucked up furniture, smashed glassware. Really sad about the loss of one of my cute mugs, but hey, no blood.
