What's one positive/neutral thing that's happened today?

I’ve largely been using modifications on Manon’s templates for most of my Twine projects, and decided it might do me some good to develop an understanding of how to start from Sugarcube’s base UI and have it look a little better. Nothing radical, just… a tiny bit less default, and quite a lot more pink.

Quite pleased with myself. Followed Manon’s guide and it all went well! Got some pink in there, a handful of cute fonts, everything is nicely commented for future reference and I’m pleased with how it looks. It’s quite basic, but warm, and that’ll do just fine for a longer form things I’ve been working on, since the base functionality is quite close to what I wanted. Might throw in some of Chapel’s marvellous macros and we’re off to the races.

Even better when it’s done in two languages! :grinning: ( Mots d’Heures: Gousses, Rames)

I know it’s a super low skill bar—especially if you ask people who play at a upper-middle skill level—but I finally beat a computer opponent in StarCraft: Brood War. I’ve been poking at this game since I was little, but never had the patience or time to go full-tilt and properly practice, so I don’t expect to surpass bronze tier (again: just not interested in dedicating that much effort).

Still, though, the glacial buildup of skill throughout my life has finally gotten me to a point where I can 1v1 the computer. This is also without setting the game speed super low. (The computer opponents are given more actions per second when you increase the game speed, on top of being able to see without fog of war).

EDIT: More context, I was playing as Zerg. Terran fits me way better but I don’t enjoy playing as Terran, and Zerg actually fits me the least, but I have way more fun than way. This achievement would have been way easier as Terran, but it also would have defeated the point, which was to achieve this as my fav faction.

Just achieved one hell of a code horror. Once again, I delved deep into the fully undocumented source code of ZIL, and attempted to do something that, if done correctly, will be awesome (think on the lines of the parser remembering if you did something earlier and using it to kill you later. Now think about doing it technically so it can happen with every object in the game. Now forget that because it won’t make sense if you haven’t coded it.)

awesomely cruel, in the Zarfian sense, I daresay…

Oh one hundred percent, except in a weird way. It’s impossible to make it unwinnable, but your ending will be less than satisfactory.

Oh, did I mention? It remembers past lives you had in the game! So… karma comin’ at ya.

Yay! Dan liked the game that I made for him.

Now that I’m done with the Seedcomp reviews, I can finally submit my piece to the Revival Jam! This one is an extension of last year’s Maverick Hunter: Scandalous Mission and has references to various jams / comps held in the past.

Update: Maverick Hunter is finally available to be played online. So sorry for the long delay.

And it’s in Twine, so it’s my first completed IF game in Twine (and first overall) after many months of keeping people guessed. Guessing if I can actually finish a game instead of giving just snippets.

I hope I can finally continue with Welcome to Hellwaters for IFComp '24 and maybe, a Choicescript version/port (?) (the so-called Super Turbo version).

My itch.io page also has the “affiliated with the Neo-Interactives” label now.

Noah, please do not use that verbiage while referring to being a part of the Neo-Interactives webring. It implies further involvement with our activities. Autumn and Jinx have provided templates for the webring button for you to use in DMs and on the webring page as examples.

Little man and I hung out at the mall today, and I was wearing a vintage brown zip up. He chose his own new jacket- a brown corduroy one with a sherpa lining, and he looks very cute in it! He patted the front of his jacket and remarked that “Wow, we’re like two little brown sheep,” and then while he was holding my hand on the escalator for safety, he casually mentioned that “Sheeps have best friends. In their herd. Did you know?” Very sweet.

This is a sequence of words I never thought I would possibly write, but…

A friend of my grandparents learned about my research and gifted me a fragment of a cuneiform tablet that Agatha Christie had personally given her while they were at an excavation together in Baghdad.

I’m feeling more than a little faint.

That’s amazing! (I think?)

Amanda’s game After the Accident was mentioned in the new Rosebush article, which was very exciting and pleasant for me- the transformation of my poem still amazes me. She’s a fantastic writer.

I was a little worried earlier about Dan- I hadn’t heard from him when normally we check in briefly in the mornings, (even if most of the time I’m scrambling while brushing my teeth to make it in time for the bus and to get a decent bite to eat before class) but I was right about guessing that he’d been dozing off because of the painkillers. It was good to know that nothing unfortunate had developed suddenly. And it’s always nice to hear from the people you love.

Sleepy. In some comfy pyjamas, and I got some work done on an assignment, even with a killer migraine earlier from the storm front. It’s the weekend- how exciting! I’m hoping to spend some time with my diary tomorrow, after refilling my fountain pen- the Preppy is half empty after mindless scribbles in my notebook earlier to relax and destress, and could do with being topped up with a shot of pink.

But it’s nothing urgent. There is a pleasure in the physicality of refilling it, though- and the inky fingers you’re left with that mark you as someone else in the hobby, to people in the know. And that anticipation is sort of buzzingly pleasant in of itself.

Tabitha shared a very interesting game jam that I’ve been turning over in my head ambiently, in the sort of unfocused, lackadaisical way of things tossed into the ideas stock pot for simmering: writing a story focused on breathing life into a character who is not traditionally the hero of the story, and who has been kidnapped. Thinking it might be cool to do a take on the luck of the town from Mosca’s story… (Which, as Mike informed me awhile back, is likely an homage to the Omelas story, judging from the time of publication.) So many OCs to choose from.

It’s nice to have something to preoccupy myself with, while I’m missing someone. (Of course that feeling lingers. But pushing it off to the side with a shiny bright fun idea, and anticipating the fun and delight in sharing it with them when they return, and hoping that they’re holding up alright- that’s nice in of itself. It’s no substitute for the pleasure of their company, but all good things come in time.) Also updated my blog: which I’ve been having a lot of fun with, after figuring out the syntax I need to pop into the Javascript-y bit to get the post array to work properly, consistently.

Hopefully I sleep a little better than last night. And if I don’t, well- that’s alright. That’s what coffee’s for.

I finally got around to plonking a little gallery of my games onto my Neocities, which I’ve been meaning to do for… two years now? It’s just been low down on my priority list, given limited energy. Satisfying to check that off of the to-do list. It kind of puts it into perspective how much stuff I’ve made over the time that I’ve been engaged with interactive fiction, which is pretty cool. And the covers look cute all alongside each other!

Jinx is super cute and had made a little sideblog in relation to our TTRPG campaign and its characters, and the pinned post always makes me laugh because it’s completely unrelated to our silly little court intrigue fantasy setting, but absolutely reads as if it had been tailor made with the kittens (Zeke, Ember, Mihr- especially Zeke and Ember, with their bravery and adventurer pants) in mind. She mentioned that she finds it funny/sweet when she sees that I’ve reblogged it again because I do it quite often while browsing through the queue. Never fails to make me smile.

Cat, I’m a kitty cat, and I dance dance dance and I dance dance dance. Can you say the same, imperial?

I got myself a double sided, brass moon coin. I’ve been looking at it from time to time.

I also got myself a pocket watch type container. It holds mini dice set as well.

The pocket watch has glyphs on it. Does anybody here knows what those are?

Note: that 5E is from The Fablemakers book, not part of the watch.

Hard to tell at this resolution, but the symbols seem to include a mix of alchemical/astrological symbols and the runic alphabet… the circles appear to be a Ptolemaic solar or planetary system, with epicycles, but the density of the symbols, the way they’re intermixed, and the use of the symbols in each of the various concentric circles mean it doesn’t really line up with any actual system or mapping I’m familiar with - I’m certainly not an expert on this stuff but I’m guessing the various elements were chosen for aesthetic effect and there isn’t a single consistent source or meaning. Looks cool though!
