We all know the feeling… You’re stuck into a game, you think you have the solution for a puzzle, but you don’t quite know what verb to use to get the game to do what you want. What are some of the strangest things you’ve typed, when trying to figure out what to say to the game? And bonus, was it successful?
The memory of playing my first parser and typing > SCREAM in frustration, then being pleasantly shocked that it didn’t get rejected.
I’m not super creative when it comes to just throwing stuff at the wall until something works…
This is one of the best things you can contribute as a betatester: trying odd-but-logical verbs/phrasings for the author to implement. They’re like little gifts for the one or two people playing the game that will also try that thing, and they will absolutely love you for it.
I remember I was testing “Sunset Over Savannah” and at one point, you have to dive deep into the ocean without running out of air. I tried >HYPERVENTILATE, Ivan then implemented it, and later I saw at least one review of the game that called that out specifically as a nice touch. It wasn’t even an alternate puzzle solution; it was just the game saying ‘Yeah, OK, that would indeed make sense.’
