What are you listening to?

That whole album is great. The follow-up has some good songs but the debut has so many excellent tracks.

Obligatory post for today.

No song has done more to raise the public profile of September. Before that song, most people hadn’t even heard of September. They were all like ‘Whatember’?? But after that song, you bet everyone had heard of September. Really amazing song. Really.

This song still rocks today.

Had to post this because the kids over on Mike Russo's IF Comp 2025 Reviews - #97 by DeusIrae don’t even know the greatest song of all time.

When I first heard this, I thought it was a Stones song. Later on, they did release an album titled Twilight Zone so maybe I was on to something.

I just found my old Massive Attack Remixes CD in the back of the shelves.
And now I’m listening to a lil’ 8-minute dub.

/radiation ruling the nation/ 's remix of Massive Attack’s Protection.

A little (or a lot of) musical theatre:

It really captures the vibe of the original film, and the opening scene with the narration, yet also adds extra, introducing every character in the story. Also, better than the original Broadway tunes IMO.

I have to admit, Amélie would lend herself pretty well to a musical, lol. It could be a Umbrellas of Cherbourg/Young Girls of Rochefort thing.

A few months ago I completed a long term project of getting my digital music collection to my amplifier. (Long story short - bought a Raspberry Pi, HDMI cabled it to my amplifier, bought a tiny keyboard, tiny monitor, put music on ssd and connected it to Pi).

It’s been a major life enricher as I can finally, easily, get at or jump amongst tons of music I no longer have the CDs for – or do have the CD for but can’t reach the CD – or had completely forgotten about.

Something I re-encountered is this incredible alt-rock song Bower of Bliss (from 1993, pretty much the Year Of Alternative) by Sydney band The Clouds. I know this is a listening thread but I usually only share here if there’s a music video, and a good one. This song gives me frisson.

I emerge from the aftermath of IFComp to find Rush is touring with a new drummer? Here she is, Anika Nilles:

I’ve recently discovered this cool site called Newgrounds Radio, a part of Newgrounds. Newgrounds is much like Itch.io in that it lets you upload webgames, art and music and vote on other people’s submissions. Newgrounds Radio randomly picks uploaded music submissions to play. It’s a whirlwind of bizarre indie music, the kind of stuff you’d get from the depths of Bandcamp. Mostly instrumental but occasionally stuff with lyrics, sometimes extremely NSFW lyrics, shows up, so be warned.

I’ve found a lot of random cool indie musicians using this site. As a bonus, the default music license on Newgrounds allows you to use the music in any webgame, and a lot of people also mark their music uploads as Creative Commons. You can easily download the songs for free with an account. Great way to find music to use on a game.

[Edit, no account needed to download songs. Don’t know why I thought one was necessary.]

I honestly wish they’d either have stayed broken up, or changed their name to “Geddy Lee Alex Lifeson and Anika Nilles” or something.
