Yes, albums are the way.
Speaking of the 90s, I saw people mentioning it was Peter Gabriel’s birthday the other day, so I wound listening to Us. Lotta good stuff on there but I’m partial to Blood of Eden:

It’s so funny because a lot of my favorite albums come from 1990-2005, and then there’s a giant blank spot of “I do not care”, and then my favorites pick back up in 2018. The only stuff I liked in that blank spot was from Celldweller and Blue Stahli.
Hell, if it weren’t for Failure and Radiohead (obviously, lmao, could I get any more predictable?) I would agree.
Actually, Jose Gonzalez’s In Our Nature, 2007, that’s very good. It could never reach the level of its predecessor, Veneer, but still good!
I heard a bit of their new stuff, but never really gave it a proper go. It sounds like I’m missing out on something. Alright I’ll give it a shot again. ![]()
Regarding the 90s having the best songs. Music was on the airwaves and the television back then in a big way. Music was a major form of entertainment. People had to buy albums to listen to their favourite tunes and seeing a big stack of albums was common in most homes. Every record label was signing new bands, trying to find the next Nirvana for the whole decade and beyond.
It also led to a time where many bands got screwed over by labels. One of my favourite indie bands were actually signed by Geffen Records. The album was fully produced in 2000 and… never released for reasons that only some executive thought was a bright idea.
Luckily, the internet has a way of digging up stuff and sharing it despite the best efforts of disinterested higher-ups. This one is a great song, but I also recommend Working Title, Signed EC and Six Flags. I think you might like these guys, Max.
The Primrods - Frances Gary Offers You The Thrill Of A Lifetime
Though you can’t get it on Spotify, you can download the whole unreleased album here.
Some of the songs sound very irritating on first listen (Atom City Queen is the most obvious example), but in that case, the verses have very interesting vocals IMO, and you’ll have to see what you like since it varies in style. You seemed to enjoy Counterfeit Sky (from The Heart is a Monster), so that’s a good sign - love that one.
Let me know what you think!
I’ll have to give them a try!
I think I stopped paying attention to new music sometime after I finished university, lol. Sometime after Daft Punk released Random Access Memories. XD
I think the only “new” bands I like are ones that play in old genres I like, like the Surfrajettes.
I am listening to your heart and some sonatas to improve my violín skills. ![]()
Wow, are the 60s and 70s no longer on young people’s radars at all anymore? I am getting old.
Well, the music of the 80s and 90s is as old now as the music of the 50s and 60s were in the 90s.
Though, one of my favorite pieces of music just recently celebrated the 201st anniversary of its first performance.
Though, most of the new music I’ve heard in the last decade that I’ve actually enjoyed has been new stuff from acts that have been around for 20+ years. Granted, it’s been nearly a decade since I had a regular commute listening to the radio, I’m in the minority that still buys CDs when he buys music, and when I look up songs on YouTube or Amazon Music Unlimited, it tends to be a nostalgia trip and my earliest memories are timestamped 1990 and I was raised on a mix of 90s country, the oldies, and gospel(my mother was a church pianist).
Have scattered favorites all over the 50s through 00s though, though there are many I’m vague on their date.
My latest nostalia trip was trying to get my echo to play Japanese openings from anime that aired on US television circa the late 90s and early 00s, and rearely getting the originals, but sometimes discovering awesome covers dubbed into Enlish or other European languages. Highlights include an English version of The Biggest Dreamer from Digimon Tamers and a translation of Oversoul from Shaman King into what I’m pretty sure is a romance language.
My local radio station, whfs, always used to play an acoustic/electric mashup of this song to the point where either “real” version now sounds weird to me. I tracked one down online years ago and it’s now what I put in my personal playlists.
I just recently discovered The Surfrajettes on Bandcamp. I think because I’ve been listening to a lot of Los Straitjackets lately. Especially their stuff with Nick Lowe. The version of Shting-Shtang they did together is much more fun than the original album track from just Nick.
The sound of silence…literally.
Well actually, there’s some birds chirping, and the sound of my keyboard, and my breathing. But it’s only me home right now.
Man, I never caught a radio station doing something like that, making their own mix of a song to stand out. That’s dedication.
I’ve been revisiting “So Excellent / I go I go” by Kylie Mole. Schoolgirl brat Kylie Mole was the most popular character from Australian sketch show The Comedy Comedy in the late 80s. Popular enough to have a top ten single. If you know what an 80s Kylie Minogue song sounds like, you’ll recognise the musical style. If you don’t, there’s plenty else to enjoy.

I don’t know why, but that song reminded me of The Garbage Pail Kids. Could be that they’re both obnoxious for all the right reasons. ![]()
The Garbage Pail Kids - We Can Do Anything
Oh god, I still haven’t watched that movie! I watched a lot of Youtube videos describing it, and the song you shared. And I still have my Garbage Pail cards from '86/'87. But the puppets just look so unbelievably awful, it’s hard to be in front of them.

I get the Incredible Bongo Band version of Apache stuck in my head at least a couple of times a month. Sometimes it’s the Sugarhill Gang version instead.
Been listening to Stevie Wonder. Currently on Fulfillingness’ First Finale, “Heaven Is 10 Zillion Light Years Away”.
I remember the first time I heard “In Circles”. I was blown away. I played it on repeat way too much. ![]()
I mentioned “Faces in Disguise” earlier, but check out…
Great combo: Washing dishes and listening to 3-decades-old (someone mentioned the 90s?) EDM:
