A metal cover version of the famous Cash song? I MUST check that later.
The text of Sound of Silence is creepy (or worse) but it sounds great.

? That’s surprising.
Bandcamp recommended me this collection of Central Asian '80s dance music and I’m really enjoying the three tracks that are available so far.
John Mayall.
1933-2024.
Blues from Laurel Canyon.
A bit late to it, but I realized Heldmaschine released a new album!!
One of my favourite bands- they feel a lot like The Front Bottoms, who are my absolute top tier meowmeows of all time.
The song essentially is about quitting. It’s an athlete metaphor – where somebody spent a long time in the game, seeing themselves age out of it, and then making peace with that and being OK.
I liked that Sonic Youth cover. Nice find!
Reminds me of how I actually got into Devo by listening to a cover album made by mostly punk rock bands, aptly titled We Are Not Devo (Full album). Then I went down the rabbit hole of Devo… great showmen, great music.
Devo - Uncontrollable Urge
Devo - Gates of Steel
Devo - Girl U Want
As long as we’re talking about covers and DEVO:
(and for those not well-versed in the history of rock, the original)
Ignore the singing - this sounds like in a movie like 21 where a bunch of people are getting rich in a casino and having loads of fun partying and the like.
That’s a really famous song. (I think it’s a bossa nova.) Is he the original author?
Right now I’m listening to salsa, if I want it or not, because right outside of my window is a stage as part of a street festivity.
Yes. He’s by far the most famous bossa nova songwriter.
I envy you. This was one thing I loved about living in Brooklyn. Unexpected fairs and parades.
I’m not kidding when I say that this song changed my life and attitude towards things. I was singing it in the empty halls of my high school as I was leaving it for the last time. Not a day goes by when I don’t think of the but if tomorrow it’s all over, at least we’ve had it for a moment line.
I really love his Águas de março. I first heard it from this cover version, but I’ve listened to a load of different iterations since:
I’ve been listening to The Mountain Goats’ latest album “Jenny From Thebes” for the last week or so.
It’s nice to hear the band do another concept album, which I think are usually their strongest entries. (I think I can safely call the band “them” now with the core trio being together for at least a decade.)
As for guests, I was surprised to see Kathy Valentine on the credits and felt bad for not recognizing her name, since I like The Go-Gos.
Two of the singles and two of non-singles are catchy sound-wise, but with The Mountain Goats, John Darnielle’s lyrics are usually a big contributor to catchiness. So here’s “Same as Cash,” the most attention-grabbing song on the album IMO.
Tagging @DeusIrae to see if he has any thoughts on the album
I actually haven’t gotten a chance to listen to it yet, since my opportunities to listen to music are unfortunately quite constrained these days. I’m excited to get to it, though, since I agree with you re the concept albums, and I’m a fan both of Ancient Greece and, er, Jenny (assuming she’s the Jenny from Jenny?)
Jenny (assuming she’s the Jenny from Jenny?)
Yeah, there are quite a few callbacks in the lyrics and liner notes.
Ancient Greece
I can’t speak to the Ancient Greece stuff on the cover but Genius suggests the track “Fresh Tattoo” is related.
Yesterday I re-listened to one of my favourite Air songs, Kelly Watch the Stars.
I have no idea how Mike Mills conceived of the video idea, but I gotta hand it to him, it’s memorable. Song’s been permanently lodged in my memory since I saw the video on MTV in childhood
I was actually disappointed when I heard Moon Safari and realised the album version isn’t the single version. The single version is far better. Had to edit my album folder to substitute the single version, and that made Moon Safari perfect. XD
While part of me says some kind of local festival in the streets of this trailer park could be nice, I’d hate for any such festivities to be so close I could hear them through my window. Granted, I’m an introvert and would want to get away from the festivities once i’ve had my fill and any kind of background noise makes hearing my screen reader much harder.
