Welcome by Ryan Veeder hints

I’ve found the bee chancellor and the termite chancellor and reached checkpoint 2. I’ve acquired:

a 8 pound weight
a 4 pound weight
a 2 pound weight
a 10 pound weight
a 5 pound weight
a fiery orb (providing light)
a lock of acceptance
a relax box
a puzzle box
a list of eight chancellors
a high-powered propellor cap (being worn)
an AA battery

I’d like a hint for opening the Checkpoint 2 door—can I do it with what I have now? Is there any better way to figure out the right combination of items to put on the scale than trial and error?

EDIT: Just discovered going “ana”, so for now I am unstuck!

Okay, I’ve now passed Checkpoint 2 but am stuck again. I have all the chancellors but one (the ones I have are ant, cicada, beetle, spider chancellor, fly chancellor, termite chancellor, and bee), and this is my inventory (I’ve dropped items that I’ve already used/solved and don’t think I’ll need again):

an icy cube
a pollinating totem
a relax box
a fluttering totem
a colorful totem
a carefree totem
a key of dismissal
a lock of acceptance
an energy-efficient halter top (being worn)
a high-powered propellor cap (being worn)
an AA battery

An hints on proceeding from here appreciated!

Wow, well done! All you’re missing out on are one or two locations that are particularly tricky to find.

I think the only hint you should need is, try turning off the propellor cap while flying over the valley (between the cliffs).

Stuck too. Assuming I’ve understood the goal correctly, and based on Tabitha’s posts, I am only missing the cicada. Is it in the puzzle box or am banging my head on a wall there? Is there some use for being stuck in place with the halter top?

Also, I think I found a way to potentially softlock the game: Squeeze into the spider peasant or beetle plebeian, put on the propeller cap, fly off the cliff, and then revert back to your former self. The cap is now gone with no way to retrieve it.

Love the way you use error messages as clues.

Since you’ve picked up on the use of error messages as clues, which ones have you seen? Do any of them seem relevant to the puzzle box?

I’m not surprised that you can softlock the game! Given the nature of the game, it might be impossible to eliminate all such possibilities. But I already did something to make it impossible for the frog to wear things, so adding similar rules to the plebeian and peasant shouldn’t be a problem.

But I might wait a little bit to fix it in case anyone finds anything else along those lines…

I’ve seen P4 (can’t become a non-person) and P44 (can’t remove a door or other permanent world object).
I know what those two clues mean.
Using the key of dismissal on the puzzle box just makes it vanish with its presumptive contents, and I can’t become it because it’s not a person. None of the other things I can become or dismiss seem to be useful here. I’m guessing there’s some third error I haven’t seen yet?

It sounds like you should have explored enough to have found one or other of the bedrooms?

Assuming that you have, what’s the classic way to interact with a bed in IF?

Oh, duh. I really thought I had already tried that! Maybe I did early on, before I learned to pay attention to the errors and forgot about it. Anyway, puzzle solved, thank you!

Thanks much, I’ve now finished! :tada: I have to admit, I started out skeptical about the idea of a quote-free Inform game, but in the end it was quite fun!
