I just started The Little Match Girl 2 and I’m either very confused or I’ve run into a really obvious bug … after receiving the assignment, I look at the candle (which the game strongly hints is the right thing to do, and is the obvious way to progress if you know the series’ main mechanic anyway) and the game prints “[…]”, waits for me to press a key … and then drops me back in the same room with no further text. This looks like a bug, except I find it hard to believe that I’ve run into a bug that obvious in a widely-played game that’s been around for a couple of years. Unless something has changed in the interpreter? I’m using the “play online” link from IFDB.
You mean this version, right? Pressing a key at that point begins some timed text accompanied by music (after which you get dropped in a different room with different text). It’s working okay for me in Chrome/Firefox/Safari. So is the itch.io version.
Are you using an exotic browser?
I’m using Chrome on Android. The version you linked to is the one I was playing and doesn’t seem to trigger the transition properly.
I just tried the itch.io version (which I wasn’t aware of) and that does work, although (unlike the first version) the scrolling keeps positioning the text so that the on-screen keyboard is covering the text entry line. They both claim to be using interpreter version 2.1.6 though, so it seems weird that that behaviour is different.
The frame that itch uses for fullscreen games has some weird interactions with Vorple that affect scroll bars and scrolling and related phenomena; I’m honestly surprised it works at all.
Both versions are working for me in iOS Chrome! And I just used my wife’s phone and checked it in Android Chrome and it’s working there too!
I have listened to the Little Match Girl theme eight times in the past hour!
Ok, it seems weird that it (the non-itch version) isn’t working for me then, but your comment about it working in Safari prompted me to try it in Vivaldi instead of Chrome and it works fine there! So I have a working solution for getting to play on my phone. Thanks!
Also, thanks for writing it in the first place!
Thanks for putting so much work into playing it!
