Topics and authors

Hello, all:

I have a librarian in my game and I’d like her to have responses for a number of different topics and also different authors. I’m asking the community for any authors or topics they’d expect to have a librarian have a response about. The more, the better!

That sounds really fun, but you’ll have to include EVERY AUTHOR THERE IS or people are going to get grumpy that they can look up Tolkien but not Jemisin. It’s a Herculean task. For your sanity’s sake, maybe she should be a specialist in something niche, like 21st century fantasy written by women (Jemisin, yay!). Then she could look down her nose at you if you ask about Tolkien, or about hundreds of thousands of everybody’s favorite fiction, nonfiction, and poetry authors. “I am a specialist. I specialize. If you want to read unimportant authors, try looking at the so-called canon.”

I tried to do something similar but on a much smaller scale in this very small game I made called Standing on the Shoulders of Giants. Source code here:

You could search for authors on the science shelf and on the fiction shelf.

lol. Well Herculean seems about right. I like your idea about specializing and will look at it from that angle. Thank you for your feedback!

I’m implementing a sizeable library, and on top of it, I’m a major bookworm, but I have found an interesting (and consistent with the narration) system for handling the books & bookshelves: basically, X Bookshelf lead to the PC character sorting out from the spine the books potentially useful for the story & narrative, and the books eventually has an index (later I’ll try to coax the good Eric into implementing enumeration to adv3Lite’s ConsultableTopic (albeit the enumeration limits of TADS library don’t allow realistic indexes, surely a form of “suggested ConsultTopic” is far better than a “guess the topic”…)

Best regards from Italy,
dott. Piergiorgio.
