Hey! I hope it’s alright to ask for hints for games that are currently in comps, because this has been eating me since yesterday. Can anyone help me get past the librarian in the Abbey of the Hidden Rose? I feel like I’ve tried everything.
Yes, as I tested it and was just playing the final version yesterday. You will find that the same (or similar) clues are provided in different places within the game. For this one, you need to read the monk’s journal. Once you realise that the librarian is “the silent one”, clue 7 will tell you what you need.
Right, so from the clues I’ve found it seems to me I need to say “Lux in Tenebris” to the librarian but every variation of that I’ve tried hasn’t worked. What am I missing?
Edit: okay, so I picked up the monk’s journal now and said “Lux in Tenebris” in the library while having it in my inventory, and that worked! Before, I had only read the journal but not picked it up. Thank you for your help!
Hi talsvals,
When you find the journal in the dorm - if you give journal to skeleton / put journal on skeleton/ put journal on fingers / put journal in fingers - a restless spirit of the departed monk appears. If you talk to it, it will give you the librarian password and tell you to remember to keep the journal with you.

I should be near the end now. I’m only missing one of the missing seven things I need to collect, the brimstone tear, could use a hint. I’ve made the vial of mercury in the alchemy area, and I think I have to use that somewhere, but I don’t know where or how.
General tip for others: for anyone else that might need help finding the seven things, there are two objects that’ll help a lot: a journal which is found on the first floor, and something that’s found in the upstairs of the abbey which I missed until quite late, so make sure to check up there and examine things in the description.
Hi dgtziea,
Sounds like you made good progress indeed. ![]()
Maybe you missed visiting a room? You should now know what to do with the seven ‘keys’ and where to go with them. You will need a source of light of course and also an object that is to protect you. Did you solve the Chapter house puzzle with the chairs? If so, you will have found the object you will need to protect you in the room below it… As for the Brimstone tear - go to the place where where you found the source of light and go down and north. There is an effigy of a crusader in this solemn vault. You need to open/move/lift the effigy/tomb/crusader to discover the brimstone tear. Hope this helps.

I found the brimstone tear! I’d touched the effigy in a previous playthrough but mostly forgotten about it, as I’d thought it was just an old-school text adventure random death at the time. I thought the alchemical gloves had maybe been used to protect me when I was making the mercury; I don’t know if I’d have thought it would protect me from the effigy, especially since looking back at the death text, it mentioned acid getting on my face as well as my hands. I think the way that death is written makes me think I need protection from the corrosive acid (and that opening the tomb is what triggers the acid), and not that I need to prevent my bare hands from touching the effigy in the first place.
So I have all the symbols in place now, but not sure what that triggered or what to do next: “Now that the seven symbols are affixed into their respective sockets, the whole pedestal begins to glow with soft light and vibrates expectantly.” I can’t find anything new that seems to have happened though. Different sources (arturo, journal, parchment) tell me that putting all seven symbols in place should reveal a hidden vault, a door, or a stone…
Hi dgtziea,
It is simply that you must annoint or activate the pedestal with your alchemical creation.
empty/pour the vial on/over the pedestal/symbols to open up the final chamber and access the elixir. In retrospect, maybe I should have a made another hint/clue about that.
Thanks for playing.

I’ve just searched through my transcripts and can’t find any clues related to @dgtziea’s question. Are there any? Perhaps you need to ask an NPC about something. If so, what’s the key word to ask about?
Hi Garry,
I checked and there is:
ask hermit about mercury
Hermit: “The TRUE Philosophical Mercury is born from the sacred marriage of opposites, then refined by fire and sulphur. It is the key that unlocks the final mystery.”
However,I just made a reply for -
ask alchemical master about mercury/vial/alembic/furnace/sulphur that reads:
The smoky figure of the alchemy master intones: ‘Sulphur must unite with the mercury born of fire and water. Heat them together in the proper vessel in here. The TRUE Philosophical Mercury is born from the sacred marriage of opposites, then refined by fire and sulphur. It truly IS the key that unlocks the final mystery. Use it in the right way to activate the seven symbols when they are in place on the pedestal.’
I uploaded the updated version today at 5.10 pm gmt.

I got stuck at a different point in the game. I have mapped it out and I’m pretty sure I’ve visited all the rooms, but I still can’t find the salt crystal. Can anyone help me?
Hi talsvals,
Have you visited the transmutation circle chamber with the chalk circle? There’s something you must do there…
enter circle/go in circle/stand in circle/activate circle/touch circle/touch symbols
Good luck.
catventure/Phil.
I really don’t know how I missed this room
does it only open after you’ve done something else in the game? Anyway, thank you so much! I have finished the game now! Thank you, I had a lot of fun playing it
