I’m reviewing the games in the only reasonable order - by title length.
Boo!
There are two aspects to this game: The audio design and the text. The audio design was really excellent and spooky. The text was marred by some rather glaring translation error which unfortunately ruined the atmosphere. (A kiss on your chick.) With another round of beta reading this will be a most excellent little horror game.
Roar!
This was a great, fun, silly little romp. I laughed out loud a few times. Recommended.
Yarry
I’ve read a lot of what is called ‘weird fiction’ lately, and this falls squarely in that category, in the best way. Unsettling though nothing really happens. For once this wasn’t actually diminished by repeated playthroughs, but made the whole story just more unsettling in the best way. Recommended.
Sundown
This was so well written. I could pretty soon tell where this was going, but it was all so heartbrteakingly well done that I didn’t mind at all. Recommended.
Narthex
A snack sized, cute little game with very fine graphics.
Rustjaw
This was a funny parody (I think?) of typical Twine conventions. I did not quite land for me. I’m happy to concede that this is personal preference. I ddi love the monster art. (And this amusing bug:
“Did you see the way the human looked at you?” says Icicle Face to Icicle Face. “Looks like he has a favorite.”
An admirer
This game is an interesting exercise in minimalism and obsession. You can feel how this is close to a real conversation, and the artificiality (understandble due to the 4 hr constraint) made it feel a bit like talking to a mad A.I. I’d love to see this turned into an expanded piece, with some of the rough edges filed off (if you poke it, some standard responses DO work.) It was a bit tough sometimes to know what would open new lines of conversation (I expected “make it up to you” to work).
Ghost Hunt
I love the Adventuretron look and loved this cute little game about catching ghosts. My only complaint is that I wished it would’ve been longer with more ghosts to catch!
Mathphobia
My whole review in 7 seconds I liked this, but I guess it all depends on how fun it is for you to dust off your highschool math. Recommended. (Unrelatedly, ChatGPT is really good at math problems!
Thanks for your review! I planned a third ghost but ran out of time on the clock - hoping to make an extended version after the comp!
Thanks for playing my game and reviewing it!
No more
A small little catharsis of a game. I liked the level of implementation and the inclusion of a story mode to see what you might habe missed.
The Column
What a great concept! That said, I feel to truly make this work this story should be longer and have fewer and more fleshed out character. As it stands, it was a bit tough for me to get a grasp of the characters, and it felt a bit word puzzly. I’d love to see an expanded version of this, where it all has room to breath. Judging from the text that is there, the author has the chops to pull this off.
Fireboat
I was utterly charmed by this. The implementation is a bit shoddy, making some moments unintentionally hilarious (TAKE SWAT TEAM made me chuckle). The game spells out in great detail what you need to do, which is helpful, but unnecessary, as your course of action is mostly pretty clear. (I had a small Guess-the-verb moment at the end.) There was a childlike eagerness in these advices, too, as if the game wanted you to hurry to get to the good part. I’m not sure the ghost story quite meshes with the terrorist plot, but the grandmotherly parts were written with such eagerness that I find it hard to fault the game. I’m looking forward to a more polished game from this author in the future.
You promise
Oh, I love Faustian deals, and I love how we always think we can get away with them, and how we never, ever can. This was a great, wicked little game with excellent use of screen effects.
A puzzled soul
There is a great game hiding in here. As it is, I had to give up as I found a machine(ry) that I couldn’t figure out how to use. This has some impressive implementation - I really liked the sense of urgency the chase created, and seeing the monster try different things in the rooms I’ve passed was really great. There are some typos, but most of all some language issues. As someone writing in a second language, I more than sympathise. But the already absract language was not helped by this, and in fact, made some moments near incomprehensible. But luckily this can be easily fixed in a post comp release. And I do hope there is a post comp release, because the ideas here are great.
There will be! We are already using the received reviews to improve the game, especially regarding synonyms and some possibly unclear situations.
Thanks for the review!
p.s. the machinery was the mind reading machinery?
Yeah! Any hints appreciated.
read very carefully the description, there is a very detailed hint on the right command to use which however may go unnoticed.
Oh, and remember to take the machinery before using it!
We hope this helps .
