Some comments on Spring Thing '25 entry "Wayfarers"

If not in the correct category, please move or instruct me.

I have to say that I was moved by the lyrical flow of Gina Rodriguez’ Wayfarers. I haven’t seen lyricism like that since reading some of Guy Gavriel Kay’s novels.

Here are some examples of text that really struck me: “exposing themselves like stains under UV light.”, “The King Beyond the Sands will have his joy”, and “that ate my limbs and chewed up my life.”

This work also features pathos and, at times, the triumph of the human spirit over adversity.

It invites the reader to reflect on suffering, connection with others, futility, and hope.

At the same time that it is all of the things I’ve mentioned above, Wayfarers is also speculative fiction that doesn’t pull any punches in commenting on mankind’s perchant for perpetual violence.

I was reminded of a truism about life: celebrate, and others will celebrate with you; suffer, and eventually you suffer alone.

Well done, Gina!

It’s fine here, but if you’d rather group it with the other Competitions > Spring Thing reviews you can.

Thanks, Hidnook. I’m new to the forum. Did I move the post successfully?

seems to me that you have successfully and correctly moved the post…

Anyway, on Wayfarers, I note that Rodriguez has tackled the very same human condition I’m tackling in Isekai, but thru the dystopian perspective, when I tackle the issue thru the utopian perspective. And this narrative approach is really interesting, from an, uh, philosophy of storytelling ? perspective.

Thank you so much for your warm words, Kyr! I really appreciate that you took the time to play my game! I’ve had this story in my head for a decade and it’s so nice to finally read others’ reactions to it.

Edit: Tigana is one of my favorites!

Hello, I am so intrigued by your comment. Can I learn more about Isekai? I think I saw another thread that mentioned it might still be in development? But I am very interested to learn more!

It’s in the development since 2020 or so, and the release date should be end-2026, and has already attracted its share of controversy, mainly because of the inevitable bad english.

I occasionally post in a dev diary here: Isekai dev diary and I have released the earliest source code for the Amnesty day, and the archive contains two story files, from the earliest alpha testing.

I love Tigana, too!

Do you have any published books or other short stories? I can imagine you’d get quite a following on Wattpad or AO3…

Thanks for the compliment!! The answer is not yet but I hope to start getting more fiction work out there. I have mostly published nonfiction until now. I am definitely a “slow burn” kind of writer and it takes me a while to flesh out my concepts into stories. You can follow me on IG @linkedstories if you’d like to keep up with my new work!
