Readthedocs.io?

In poking around on the Web, I found myself looking at an online copy of my Inform 7 Handbook. It’s at I7Handbook - The Inform 7 Handbook - I7 Handbook. Unfortunately, this archive, or whatever it is, has version 2 of the Handbook, not version 3. Does anyone know how to alert readthedocs.io to fix this?

It’s very ironic that you’re unable to edit your own handbook. You might be able to contact support but I doubt they’ll transfer ownership without the permission of the original “author”.

You could also create your own online documentation and share it. Then you’d have more control over updating it if necessary. We can add that to the master list and let the other one fade into obscurity.

Inasmuch as I am the original author, I can’t see that your reply makes much sense. I can certainly edit my own Handbook, since I have the original files! I have already shared version 3 of the Handbook (which I released three years ago). My question was specifically with respect to how to work with that particular website.

ReadTheDocs hosts the rendered HTML version of your handbook.
The source of that is a GitHub repository: Inform7handbook_byJimAikin.

I would suggest, if you don’t have one, creating a GitHub account and then to raise an issue with the maintainer, omartek.

Never mind! I assumed that that was the only online version of the Handbook that you had. I know you are the original author but assumed you weren’t the “author” of that readthedocs page. But can you post v3 to the forum? The one in the master list links to v2.

Thanks, I think. Unfortunately, github is not letting me sign in to my account, and their Verify routine is choking rather than showing me a puzzle to solve, so I’m unable to let whoever runs that repository know that their version is obsolete. If someone here has a working github account (I’ll bet a few of you do) could you file an issue with them to let them know they’re hosting an old version of the Handbook?

Sure, but like @hidnook asked: Where can one find v3.0 of the Handbook? I’m unable to find it by googling; the only link I found was on IFWiki, but it’s broken: https://www.musicwords.net/if/i7hb.htm

I’m sure the readthedocs repo can be updated if we ask, but I’m guessing they’ll need the text to update it to!

The current link is https://www.musicwords.net/if/I7_Handbook_3.pdf. I’ll see if I can fix it so that old link will start working again, so we’ll have some redundant linkage.

Okey-dokey. The link that leads to i7hb.htm should now work, loading the current version of the Handbook. Took me a couple of tries to find a pdf-to-html converter that preserves the page layout, but I think the htm file should be usable.

Great, opened an issue:

The master list now has the correct link.

IMPORTANT ALERT: The Inform Handbook version 3.0 is no longer available from musicwords.net, because I’ve abandoned musicwords.net. (Not using it anymore. Too $$$.) For the foreseeable future, it will be available from my Dropbox account at Dropbox . Also, it’s now in the IF Archive, in the Inform Manuals directory.

Omartek replied to my GitHub issue. The reason he didn’t see it for so long was that he has jumped over to GitLab, and the new repo for the website is here:

He has started work on it, and I have advised him that the PDF download has moved.
