Poll for new IFDB Awards categories

The 2024 IFDB Awards start in just about a week!

I asked earlier in this year if anyone has new categories they wanted to add. One category, Outstanding Game for Beginners of 2024, has already been added.

The following ones were nominated by Otistdog. I’m going to present those changes in a poll below. It’s completely fine to vote no; the whole point of this is to judge public interest.

A lot of these suggestions are based on pre-existing XYZZY awards categories. Since the exact name of the award might sway opinion one way or another, I’ll provide alternate names in some of the polls. If you are voting for one of these awards and care about the name one way or another, please comment. If you don’t care or don’t want these categories, feel free not to comment.

Thanks hidnook! Although last year we deleted the difference between players choice and audience choice, so it’s a little less overwhelming.

I voted against “Outstanding Technical Implementation” because I think anyone innovating on the technical side of IF should be making ecosystem contributions rather than limiting their work to an individual game. If the technical quality of an individual game is outstanding, it can only be outstandingly bad; when a game’s technical quality is high, it’s seamless and invisible, not “outstanding”. And while ecosystem contributions deserve recognition, the IFDB awards are poorly equipped for that since these contributions don’t correspond to database entries.

I voted for everything, including “Outstanding Technical Implementation.”

Okay, these polls are closed!

Tomorrow, after I wake up, I’ll start making the IFDB Polls and announcements for the IFDB awards. Based on the votes above, all of the proposed categories will be added.

There will be a lot of polls, but don’t forget that you don’t have to vote in a category you don’t care about! That’s a way of weeding out categories that are bad ideas.
