Plans & Propositions for the 2026

OK, this being the last day of 2025, the appropriate time for disclosing & discussing one’s IF-related plans, projects and proposition !

I’ll start from mine:

I will slow down the isekai works a bit, giving much more love for the poor and unjustly neglected other WIPs, mainly the candidate entries for the Spring Thing, which for me IS the main IF competition.

Then, noting my rather weak rewieving of the '25 IFComp entries, I’ll try to find time to do some “practical exercises” in form, of, well, reviews, both here and on the IFdb prior of the '26 IFComp. (provided that Italian politics & Navy don’t join forces against my IFComp reviewing for the 2nd year in a row…)

Perhaps there will be some CYOA work unplayable to anglosaxons (that is, in Italian…)

a quick look into the poor neglected WIPs:

one in TADS2 is named High school drifter, and guess what series homages ?
Anyway, this is the current opening:

Somewhere in Japan. Your alma mater is to be demolished, and one of your former professor sent you on an errand, not only for finding old mementos, but also, for discreetly locating its darkest secret.
"You see, Yukio-kun, I never found those in twenty year of discrete hunting, but somewhere here are still hidden weaponry from the Pacific War, among them handgranates, knee mortars and their ammo. You are an architect now, isn't ? perhaps you have more luck than me.
I have contacted your senpai, Hiragi, who is an JNSDF Officier, so we can discreetly dispose of those once and for all. But, first, we need to find those; this is a serious danger for the demolition crew, and I'm sure that you want to be at peace of mind about this serious danger."
After this oral request, he handles you a list of the mementos he desire to be recovered.
Some day later, in early morning, you start your quest, out of respect and devotion for your Sensei, and for averting a major, deadly, work accident.

The other major WIP in TADS2 is a Final Exam, and the current opening shows too obviously the inspiration from a certain Kerovnian guild

You're an aspiring member of the infamous Guild of Industrial Archaelogists, whose legendary expeditions and daring recoveries pervade global folklore, and today you are tested if you're worth of joining the ranks of the renowned Guild, thru a field exercise, hunting for sundry but unspecified industrial relics around a former fishing station on a rather stereotypical deserted island, equipped with with the barest set of tools of trade and some guidance notes.
Now, between you and your admission to the Guild stands only

This worn-out, rickety and old jetty lead inland northward to a narrow road between a pair of dilapidated and worn-out buildings, beyond which you spy a larger building near the base of the steep cliff of the low hill dominating this island, whose thankfully gives a modicum of shelter from the cold northern winds whose has rendered the sailing here very miserable.

On TADS3, aside Isekai, there’s a major work, in adv3,The Putsch of 1908, very neglected, as the date notes:

moving on Inform 6, there are Chronomancy I, the first of three IF homaging the “Big Three” of the nineties and Aughties, (I is written in Inform 6/stdlib, II in TADS3 and III in Hugo)

Apologies for the rather long introductory wall of text (I’m seriously evaluating moving it into an external .pdf feelie…) with guaranteed bad english (the last revision of said opening predates Creative Cooking, 'nuff said…:

Chronomancy. The most powerful magick and the ultimate history research tool.
In few words, it's the most powerful Art, handled only by the most attuned to
the Subtle, allowing them not only time travel, but also timetravelling into the
minds and souls of past people. Even the most powerful ones.
This alone explain both its power and the ultimate nature in Historiography.
Powers now gone for good has attempted to both suppress and exploit Chronomancy,
but utterly failed because Chronomancers can timetravel also in the bodies and
minds of leaders, and in the "night across centuries" their power bases was
destroyed and now the world enjoy real freedom, no dictators, no hypocrite
politicians, no greedy riches-grabbers, no spiritual, racial, gender, ethnical
and ethic repression.
In other word, True Freedom. This imply that Franklin's principle of Eternal
vigilance must be strictly observed.
Because of their high attunement to the Subtle, the Chronomancers are by innate
nature benign people, perhaps to a fault, and with an unique curiosity, even on
very trifling matters, the proverbial people capable of watching for an entire
week the trails of ants, with utmost care to not harm even a single ant. Because
their power is one of time travel, they often dedicate their time to historical
research and doing Benjamin Franklin's eternal vigilance (the true price of
Freedom)
[Press Any key]
In the due vigilance and historical research, a fact emerges, that the "hidden
story" was more vast than expected, and the forces driving and steering History
prior of the Era of Magick was often those "behind the throne" and their tools
of persuasion and trade includes pratically everything: greed, pride, lust,
envy, to name some of the "classical" and most known.
the British isles seems to be a particulary fertile terrain for those forces,
and currently the historical research is focused on the Neoliberist-Thatcher
era, more than a millennia ago.
In your historical research, you noticed a young and rampant PR lass of the
eighties of XXth Century, buzzing around the Tory party, and already well-
connected by 2nd half of that decade.
Obviously, a so well-connected girl in her 20s is clearly active in the "hidden
history", so you decided that a field research in her body and mind is in order.
Especially in a day when she is alone in her country bungalow not far from
London, because looking at her private life (and notes, documents &c..) should
raise the shroud.
so, after discovering a day she was free in her house you prepare for casting
the Chronoshift into her body and mind... oh, what about her?
[Press Any Key]

Her name, Danae Mingyu Fraser. Her age, 23.
Her Grandfather and father are breton; her Grandmother and mother are from Hong
Kong; that unusual mixture of British and Chinese blood conspired to dote her
with a rather abundant "sexual capital" concentrated in her petite (just 5') and
lithe body.
her eyes are slant, shaped like a doe's eyes thanks to her quarter of british
blood, and her complexion is of a lighter shade of yellow, and her East asian
curves are small but very well shaped.
Her general appareance of Asian cuteness is at the core of her really high
"sexual capital" and she know well how to exploit it, not only for success in
her PR work, but also for advancing her social standing and power leverage.
On top of this, she is also blessed with an uncanny ability for doing quickly
and perfectly even the most complex scheduling and organizational work in no
time, even on the spot, a perk whose raise her appreciation in the decision-
making circles.

and that’s for the poor neglected IF in Inform 6. Lastly, on hugo, I have a recently-started work, which is actually inspired by a dream I have, named Hunt for the lost car:

and, lastly, there is A space for yourself, a sort of “dark science fiction”, a lone survivor of a planetary-wide asimovian disaster:

You remember little of your youth in your home; the love of your parents and
siblings was what kept you sane when these off-world people abducted you and
enslaved you in their ugly world; after a long time of fatigue, abuse and few

the final suffering, in the end there will be no more abuse and pain..

a cryo tank, and the last thing you remember is that you hoped that whatever
experiment they have in mind is conducted on your frozen body... no pain at

Get another proper game done. I’m working on the large Fridgetopia: Revisited game, but might make it a gollab game with someone. That’s my WIP.

I would like to have a tested release of my second large parser game ready in June.

Sharpee beta is about to be released as an npm package. I’m currently porting mainframe Zork to it and that’s gone extremely well. I plan to create a web app that will allow a user to play the game in a dual pane format where the game is on the left and there is dynamic content on the right. That content is TBD, but it’s likely to include maps, code, and possibly Imp/Infocom history.

I have two long-standing WIPs I plan to complete this year:

Aspect of God: You are essentially an angel (though you don’t see yourself that way) helping people on Earth and opposed by a dark angel. The interactions are a challenge since the PC can’t directly interact with the physical world and is invisible to all NPC’s.

Reflections:A three-character tragedy about family, power, secrets, and love.

Depending on where IFComp lands on the use of GenAI code generation, one or both could be submitted to the comp as Sharpee entries.

I’ve kind of given up on getting my first written IF otome game published in a timely manner, so I think for 2026 my goal is to write a quick and dirty dating sim in time to submit to Spring Thing. (Innuendos absolutely intended.)

I’ve already started the thing, sort of a bottle episode where there is only 4 characters (the MC and three love interests).

This is the first time I’ve written a game primarily in VSCode, rather than the Twine visual editor, which is funny because idk how much editing by others I’ll end up having time for. (I know that editing is always important, but like I said, the goal is quick and dirty.)

Welcome, fairytale creatures one and all, to the premiere television event of the year! Bigger than Gnomeball, Alice’s Mad Adventures, or even Prince Charming and Cinderella’s Wedding Special!

Yes, that’s right, it’s time for VILLAINOUS TRUE LOVE, the dating show where we take four lucky contestants out of the prison dimension, place them in a perfectly secure isolated castle, and see which of them are capable of TRUE LOVE.

Every single interaction in this castle is recorded for you, our esteemed audience! And what’s more, your favorites will receive special tokens of affection, like candlelit dinners and other niceties. To help encourage these former Villains to play nice with each other. (They really need it).

The winning couple will be let out of the prison dimension and allowed to resume regular life. After all, everyone knows those capable of True Love are capable of redemption.

Now, let’s meet the contestants!

Anyway, so excited to be more involved in the IF community in 2026!

I have a Hugo game I have been working on for a very long time that I would like to finish and release in 2026.

I have three projects in the works:

  • little rooms in time, a quick one I’m putting together for Shufflecomp using a new-to-me system
  • my Spring Thing project that’s been in the works for close to a year, currently titled Sic Transit (though I’m thinking about changing that, either back to the original title Inertia or something else entirely). It’s surreal and sprawling and I love it a lot, but it’s pretty different from my other published stuff in a lot of ways.
  • Lustratio, the game that was supposed to be for this past Ectocomp, then for the Short Games Showcase, and has now been cast aside in frustration for the time being. For a piece that’s probably going to come in at sub-10k words and had significantly clearer narrative goals going in than Sic Transit/Inertia/insert title here, it has been an unmitigated pain in the posterior trying to get the tone and themes right.

I’ve got some pretty significant life changes coming up in 2026 (living and working halfway around the world, for starters) so I’m not even starting to think about anything past Spring Thing, to be honest. I would like to do more testing for other games as time allows, though. I feel like that’s a reasonable goal!

I’ll finish Passerine Hills: Just a Bite and move on to Passerine Hills: The Golden Apple. That’s the main goal. Other goals include:

  • write some more weird stuff
  • write something nice and fluffy
  • DON’T turn life tragedies into IF
  • participate in Ectocomp just to see if I can stay in top 5

I have a long-standing game idea I’ve been kicking around since at least 2017 about a great depression era-bank heist with a plot twist. The game has undergone tons of changes over the years because it never seemed interesting (at one point everyone was going to be famous 20’s characters like Mrs Dalloway or Scout or the Grapes of Wrath guy; at another point, it was going to be written in heavy gangster-like dialects using terms like ‘bazoos’, but I couldn’t get my mind wrapped around either of those).

I’ve made progress and about 1/3 of the game is in testing right now. I hope to complete it in 2026. I was debating on releasing it in IFComp or not, but right now I plan on releasing it in Parsercomp if it runs in 2026.

If all goes well, this will be my most productive year ever.

I’ve done a post-comp version of The Organ Grinder’s Monkey that I’ll release shortly after PunyComp 2025 finishes.

I have 7 games that have been tested and just need to have all the test comments applied. (Sorry to the testers of those games for the delay.)

I have 15 games that I’m working on for The BDB Project. The aim is to release at least one per month.

I’m hosting Text Adventure Literacy Jam 2026 and feel obligated to support that by writing an archaeology-themed game suitable for beginners. I have an idea for the start (story, protagonist and location), but nothing more than that.

I have a pile of other works in progress. One is based on a seed from SeedComp 2025, so I can use that for SeedComp 2026 (if it goes ahead), and one of the others could be finished off for ParserComp.

There will no doubt be lots of games to be tested and I have a stack of maps, solutions and updates to do for CASA, IFDB and IFWiki.

I’ve mentioned this elsewhere, but the games I’d like to work on this year are (titles presented without any explanation):

  • Void Space Pirate Radio
  • The Submariner
  • The Death of Alan Watts
  • Emerson Sprylock: Gentleman Rascal (game book)
  • Canopic Jar

If I get one done this year, I’ll be pleased.

WOW. You are working on soooooo many stories at the same time! How will you decide when you work on one or another? Why did you stop working on them? Yhey’re reaaaal nice (っ’ヮ’c) Do you ever feel like the stories and character voices are mixing between each other?

Okey. that was a lot of questions. I will back off now (,>﹏<,) . Good luck with all of them. May 2026 be as you wiiish !

I always love looking at these threads and seeing what people are working towards! No plans exactly, but I do have a few IF-related propositions on the horizon:

LEVIATHAN (do you have what it takes to win TV’s newest and most intense survival competition show?). It’s been 15% done for like three years. And this year is Survivor 50. I gotta finish this game already.

Kira is typing… (your friend is in trouble and needs your help, again). I started writing it for ECTOCOMP but ran out of time, twice. Third time’s the charm?

I also want to build a big puzzly IF game for EnigMarch this year. I don’t know anything about it yet, except I guess it will have 31 puzzles stitched together somehow.

Oh yeah, and I want to finally learn how to use Decker!

Well lessee… I cannot promise anything will get finished in 2026 (I tend to miss deadlines for comps/jams) but I am working on some things:

  • Getting some more experience creating stuff in ZIL: writing little pieces of code to get to know the language better while reading through the ZIL docs.
  • Getting some experience creating an Inform7 game with hyperlink support. I’d love to have a parser game done which is not a PITA when played on mobile.
  • Continue working on my “pack rat” WIP (title might change) which is currently my second largest IF. Most of it goes into my NPC implementation because I want to have NPCs which do more than just stand around and ignore whatever the player is doing.
  • Dusting off material I used for a game development course in the hopes of recycling it as IF.
  • Collecting background material for a sequel to my “One King” IFComp 2023 game. I might ask Mike for an expert opinion on my writing to ensure I have the proper zestiness.
  • And other small tidbits.

My two big interactive-fiction WIPs have just grown to three:

  • One that’s a riff on a famous parser game, letting you play as the antagonists from the original (hopefully IFComp)
  • One that’s part of my thesis, so I need a demo working by 26 March (hopefully IFComp)
  • One that was inspired entirely by the TALP prompt and has had its entire structure come together in the last couple days, now it just needs to be written (hopefully TALJ)

With any luck, all three will be coming out this year, setting a new record for me actually finishing and releasing things!

In other IF news, I’m hoping to get Dialog 1a/01 released in January or February, so that people can use all my new improvements and bugfixes. It’ll be the first release since we took over maintaining the project so I want it to be as splashy as possible.

I also have three academic papers in the works:

  • The Neogrammarian Dialect of French is basically written, but I need to go over reviewer comments and check them against some old reference books
  • Recognizing Cuneiform Signs with Graph Theory is awaiting publication in some conference proceedings, but I want to also put it on the arXiv and shop it around to proper journals
  • Aššurbanipal’s Ink is still in the outline stage, but I think it could eventually end up in a more prestigious Assyriology journal, which will strengthen my reputation among the serious Assyriologists

And one of the members of my thesis committee wants me to present at the International Congress of Hittitology this fall, if that conference actually comes together…

And then, of course, there’s actually finishing my thesis and defending it in March, and with any luck earning my doctorate! (And then the job search after that…)

It’s going to be a big year, but in the last few months I’ve gotten on some new medications for my chronic illness, and it’s really changed my life. I feel like I’m capable of more now than I ever was before. If I can turn that potential into actual momentum, I’ll be in a great place.

Omigosh, I’ve always wanted to play as one or more glauds.

I’d hoped to enter a game in IFComp 2025. And then had to postpone it to 2026. But even that’s looking unlikely now, given how seriously ill I am and so very limited time-wise from my progressive neurological illness. But it is making progress! Just too slowly to finish in time properly for this year. Especially as a parser game that needs sufficient testing. So maybe hope for 2027?

In other stuff I’d like to continue to be active in the community here, hopefully playing and reviewing more SpringThing and IFComp games. Would also like to work through more of my own backlog of games that I want to play or replay, but that depends on the dreaded have I enough time/awakeness question.

I’ve also recently been looking at my old LPMUD LPC code from the early 1990s. Am part way through converting some of that into an Inform 7 IF game. Would like to convert more. And get the MUD up and running - even just for me to play through locally - on my Mac desktop. A uni friend kindly sent me our whole LPC mudlib - including my husband’s code portion (we met as undergraduates back then, and were both Wizards on the MUD, with full coding rights) - so I’d like to check that out again.

But yup, just see what happens. And keep moving my latest target game forward writing wise. Even if very slowly :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
