You’re not required to make any decisions here. I think we were hoping to give space to feed you any advice you needed. We can close the topic, but it’ll naturally sink as long as it doesn’t get bumped.
I have had good luck with my two Mazda 3s. Very rugged cars and incredible gas mileage. I have had a Subaru Forester for 8 years. It now has 100K miles. Nothing but normal maintenance. I always get 30+ mpg.
I’m not a Car Person, but I’ve done a bit of buying super old secondhand cars from people on Craigslist in my life, and by way of general advice, I’ve found the Japanese cars to hold up better than the American ones. (I can’t speak for brands that are neither, like Volkswagen.) I especially had a terrible experience with a super old secondhand Chevy.
Edit: Although it’s been pointed out to me that since you live in Michigan, there may not be any non-American used car options at any given time, in which case this isn’t helpful and I’m sorry that it’s all I’ve got.
It might still be worth it to ask elsewhere for advice? There’s a lot of car-related subreddits and discord servers, for instance, that would probably have a larger (and more car-knowledgeable) audience than here. I could try linking this post if it might help…?
