Andrew’s game works for me, maybe that was a temporary glitch?
Regarding “Steal 10 Treasures to Win This Game” and “Cheree: Remembering My Murder”: I think their authors are also here on the forum – pinging @spaceflounder and @Robert_G so they can check the status of their entries.
Note that the game “The Fortuna” at least on some screens won’t display the link to the game, whereas the first link does not point to the new game but to an old game which inspired this game.
Cheree - 404 page not found
Steal 10 - 404 page not found
The 404 errors suggest contacting itch support. In the past, I have found support to be very unresponsive.
I’ve assumed that the authors have just not changed their game from ‘draft’ to ‘published’ yet? Steal 10 Treasures in particular is listed as having been submitted 43 days before the deadline, so @spaceflounder may not have noticed the comp starting.
Xenophobic - Submission page error, sends back to submissions page. ???
(There is nothing on Andrew’s itch.io page?)
All of this looks fine to me also? (while not logged in to itch)
Another glitch is The Fortuna – I had to fish around in developer tools to get the actual link to the playable game. (I think this is probably the author’s problem to fix, not the organisers’.)
(For what it’s worth, I’ve entered ParserComp 2023 and all its games into IFDB. For avoidance of doubt, this is just bibliographic information and links to itch.io, not archiving.)
You’ll be glad to hear that I first went to their itch homepages, then to IFDB in order to find out whether they had previously published games where they might have inserted their email addresses in an ABOUT text or similar, and only then thought to check whether they were registered on the forum.
(see the ADRIFT forum: “I have withdrawn BUG HUNT ON MENELAUS from the competition after some serious bugs were detected which made the game unwinnable. ”)
After private discussion with the author, I’ve deleted the IFDB entry for this one.
That’s a refreshing change anyway. I remember seeing the voting for last year and it seemed like too much hard work. Maybe this year I’ll actually get around to voting.
After a brief sojourn back in the workshop to bash out whatever the dents were that were preventing the game from working properly , I’m pleased to note that Bug Hunt on Menelaus is now back in the competition! This means that there are once again 16 games in ParserComp and (according to the infallible supercomputer) the percentage of Larry Horsfield games is back up to 18.75% from a meagre 13.33% before, which feels like a much more acceptable proportion.
I’m looking at playing Murder Most Foul but I’m a little intimidated; it looks like the walkthrough has around 1200 commands in it; that’s about the same as Curses! Has anyone finished it yet?
I’d love to know that, too, but so far feedback has been a little sparse (as in non-existent). I don’t think it’s a particularly difficult game but I’m aware the size might be a little offputting.
I almost finished Murder Most Foul, but there was a part I couldn’t get past near the end (I read pretty much the entire walkthrough). When I give the message from Lady Montrose to Silas, he kills me, even though I gave the message to Joves for him to rewrite it before I showed it to Kristina. I’m not sure if I missed something, or just did things in a weird order, because there were a few times that seemed to be the case, like when I actually got the deed to Perkins’ room before I even talked to Satan about it. It is a pretty beefy game compared to the others I’ve played, but even though I hit several snags, overall I’m glad I played it.
Just want to mention that if anyone is playing “Bug Hunt on Menelaus” with an old version of the Runner (before September 2020) you will probably encounter a bug while playing as Davey. This bug has been fixed in newer versions of the Runner.
However, if you don’t bother to update the Runner, when the error pops up, just close the error window, then minimize the Runner window and re-open the Runner window. This worked for me and the bug went away. But as mentioned above, this problem is not present in the newer version of the Runner. I also tried Frankendrift and it worked well too.
