ParserComp 2022 - PLEASE VOTE!

It is ALWAYS wise to question me in matters of technology. Always. I will never be offended, because the chances are very, very high that I’m screwing it up.

The ratings are hidden from the public until published. However, if you go to “Submissions” and then “Submissions in need of ratings” you may see a table with the number of ratings entered for each game.

So far, I see four games have been rated.

Try again and possibly reset the cookies in your browser.

Let me know how it works (and if).

PS. We definitely need some good chocolate chip cookies to pass around…

I tried rating a game I had beta tested (Dee Cooke’s game) with fake ratings to see what would happen:

It seems like that bug happens for me, too. If it actually saved, please disregard, as I beta tested this game! But I don’t think it did, because reloading the page gives:

I’ve tried that on umpteen browsers. I see 0 ratings for every game. I was hoping to use this count feature to target games needing ratings. I am logged into itch when I’m trying this.

I do see counts of comments in the second number column with some not 0. But the ratings column is stubbornly all 0 for me.

Ditto. I just checked and there are no ratings for any games.

As far as I can see there are 20 entries, 0 votes.

Don’t know if it can bring some light to the reason why this is happening, but I was connected at the end of submision time to check that my game was upload right, and Itch.io start to show a countdown telling that I have some minutes remaining (about 1 or so, I didnt remember exactly) before the voting stage ends.

I’m seeing 21 including “Test, to check scoring system.” Is there any test that potential voters should be trying, or would the organizers like us to keep hands off so they know when their own votes are registered?

Also, where are other places ParserComp has been advertised? The itch comp community board has some nice threads, but I’m wondering about others – if there’s a bug or in my entry, or a useful feature request, I certainly want to know about it, but also I don’t mind having as many general guides as possible through the entries e.g. what each one is generally about, how long it is, etc.

DON’T PANIC!

I’ve contacted itch admin and asked them to fix this problem (which is also occurring for me, in the test entry that I added to play around with it). I’ll let you know when this is fixed.

(If it doesn’t get fixed, then you may all panic - but only when I give you the nod to do so).

Good thing I am on blood pressure medication! :upside_down_face:

Sorry for all of the problems!

Sorry for the problems. Christopher has made contact with the itch overlords.

Jeff

I promoted it in a couple of Facebook groups and on the PunyInform Discord server. @dee_cooke promoted it on the Adventuron Discord server.

Speaking of the itch overlords, I’ve made a submission to get Inform 6 recognised as a programming language in the game’s metdata. If anyone is interested in doing the same thing for other languages like Adrift, Adventuron, Dialog, Inform 7, TADS 3, ZIL et al, then go for it! Log in first, then go to this link.

If enough people make enough submissions, they might eventually get the message that text adventures and interactive fiction are a real game genre.

Great idea! Just done one for Adventuron.

Sounds like a good beginning for a text adventure!

Great idea. Just submitted for TADS 3.

I submitted Inform 7 during last year’s ParserComp and never got a reply. Perhaps they’ll change their mind if more people submit, but as it stands I wouldn’t necessarily get my hopes up for having niche systems recognized.

I’d imagine there’s no guarantee, but volume may count, and anecdotal evidence shows Inform does get legitimate attention from elsewhere. Perhaps once enough people to, the itch people/algorithms will say “Hey, this is worth taking seriously. People are using it to make substantial products.”

Github recognizes Inform 7 as a language when it breaks down code by language (here’s a repo of mine with mostly Inform code, as an example) and rosettacode.org has info pages for both Inform 6 and Inform 7.

Github handles this through the https://github.com/github/linguist package. This accepts PRs to add new languages via submodules.

It currently supports I7 (through https://github.com/erkyrath/language-inform7) and ZIL (through https://github.com/tclem/vscode-zil-language). I6 isn’t in there but I suppose I should whip something up.

EDIT-ADD: Jeff Nyman has an I6 syntax-coloring package: https://github.com/jeffnyman/language-inform6. But I see some bugs. Also it includes properties/attributes/actions defined in the I6 library, which isn’t really kosher – they would be wrong in a PunyInform project, never mind I6 generated by I7. I’ll see how easy it is to update.

Do we add our own game listings to IFDB, or is that done by the comp wizards? I don’t want to make a duplicate listing if that service is something I get for paying the hefty entrance fee.

I started adding the games alphabetically and got about halfway done before running out of steam. Feel free to addd yours; I’d love if someone else added the others but i will add them all eventually!
