New type of cross reference for IFDB?

Continuing the discussion from Magic 8-Ball for game recommendations (new and improved Mark III):

Your comment made me think: There is a “cross references” section on IFDB pages. Maybe it would be nice to add “inspired by” to the list of options there?

That’s an interesting idea. I’ve filed it as

I made a comment there asking what the reverse direction would be called.

What would we want the toname to be? e.g. if game X inspires Y, we’d say that Y is “inspired by” X, and that X “inspired” Y?

These cross references show up in the “Game Details” section, so, for example, on Counterfeit Monkey, it might say “Inspired by Leather Goddesses of Phobos,” and on LGoP it might just say “Inspired Counterfeit Monkey”.

I wonder if “Inspired Counterfeit Monkey” is clear enough out of context, especially without any preposition.

Maybe:

Or maybe instead of “inspired” we could say “influenced”? (But, similarly, “Influenced Counterfeit Monkey” feels confusing out of context.)

It’s done now.

Inspired games say:

  • Inspired by X

The games they inspired say:

  • Gave inspiration to Y

I can change it later.

Other options:

  • Inspired the game Counterfeit Monkey
  • This game inspired Counterfeit Monkey
  • Inspiration for Counterfeit Monkey
  • The inspiration for Counterfeit Monkey
  • Was the inspiration for Counterfeit Monkey

Oh, here’s another one:

  • served as inspiration for Counterfeit Monkey

Or

  • cited as inspiration for (the game) Counterfeit Monkey
  • credited as inspiration for (the game) Counterfeit Monkey

Hm, yeah, “Inspired the game Counterfeit Monkey” helps a lot with clarity over just “Inspired Counterfeit Monkey.” I’ve changed it to that for now.

(In the plural version, it says “Inspired these games:” and a bulleted list of games it inspired.)
