Mercenary of Zero — dark fantasy interactive novel, Chapters 1 & 2 (Twine/Harlowe)

[Release] Mercenary of Zero — dark fantasy interactive novel, Chapters 1 & 2 (Twine/Harlowe)

Hi, I’ve just released Chapters 1 & 2 of Mercenary of Zero, a dark fantasy interactive novel built in Twine/Harlowe 3.3.0.

The premise: tarot cards in this world are not symbols — they are weapons, contracts, and burdens. You play as Nirvak, a mercenary whose nature as The Fool (Zero) places her outside every faction. The core mechanic ties card consumption to narrative consequence: using a card’s upright aspect destroys it while the reversed remains, which shapes both combat and story branches across chapters.

The work is written as an interactive novel rather than a traditional gamebook — branching is meaningful but the prose density is the priority.

Chapters 1 & 2 are available now. Approximately 30–60 minutes per playthrough. Chapter 3 is in development.

Happy to hear thoughts from anyone who plays it.

On desktop, the game frame in itch.io is larger than the window and makes scrolling two bars necessarily to see the content.

Would like to try the game, but I prefer previewing in itch.io itself before downloading.
