Magic 8-Ball for game recommendations (new and improved Mark III)

Hmmm. It seems like it would be good to have five valid tests so that I can at least hope for 3 out of 5. Here’s another personalization test (for a new person not previously selected).

MYSTERY PERSON #6

In this case, the selected person has (as of September 1) played just a handful of the games on the personalized list, but all were rated at 4 or higher.

Social Lycanthropy Disorder (no personalization)

Well, it looks like the score for Crystal Ball is just 2 out of 5, which I’m translating as somewhere around “working a little,” so… back to the drawing board.

The good news is that Magic 8-Ball is now at Mark IIIc and does a better job of recommending games within the same genre (but without requiring the same genre for a match).

I’d like to get some feedback from the unclaimed Mystery People about what’s right/wrong in the personalization results. Does anyone object to them being named here?

The unclaimed Mystery People were:

#1: @rovarsson
#3: @SomeOne2
#5: @aschultz
#6: @alyshkalia

Do any of you have any feedback regarding what’s right/wrong about the personalization results? Did the personalized results seem better to you, on the whole, than the generic results?

I what? (I haven’t been following the thread closely lol, so this came randomly…)

How does the personalisation work? Does that mean it takes into account more what that specific person voted on other games?

Sort of. It looks for correlations between your votes and those of other people who gave high ratings to the game in question. In theory you have a higher chance of liking the games on the personalization list.

In your case (above), the recommendations were from Cragne Manor, which you gave a high rating.

Hum…

Wasn’t following this thread as closely as I apparently should have.

I have played part of A Mind Forever Voyaging (the 10 and 20 year simulations, I think), I remember putting it aside as one I really needed to play, but not right at that time.

So aside from some great recommendations, your 8-ball reminded me that I really need to get back to AMFV.

It strikes me that as the personalisation grows, Counterfeit Monkey drops off the list, and Glowgrass keeps rising.

So Far, Blue Lacuna, and both Tower-games are on my list of must-play-soons. I remember trying Shade but bouncing off it. This was many years ago, at the start of my parsering days, so I should give it another go with all the experience I’ve built up since then.

Despite Plundered Hearts being only in the weak and moderate personalisations, it’s one that I have been eager to play for years, just waiting for the right time. This winter, probably.

So even though I haven’t rated the source game, the recommendations/reminders are really useful. Thanks for including me in your experiment.

I definitely find the personalized list better—the first one seems to be recommending some games just because they also involve werewolves, but liking SLD doesn’t mean I want to play every werewolf game haha. From the second list, I’ve actually played all but three of them (and liked all of those), so it is indeed doing well. I will note, though, that the personalized list is half games by the same author (which makes sense since I like E. Joyce’s work), and I don’t find that very useful recommendation-wise, since it’s already very easy to find games by the same author; it would be more useful to me if it showed me games that I never would have known existed otherwise.

Well… for this test already-played games were not eliminated from the list, so I think that’s part of what’s driving the concern here. The fact that you’ve already played all those games by the same author in preference to others implies that they might have been good recommendations in the past?

Still, I’d like to get a better read on everyone’s perceptions and preferences in this matter.

I think the best recommendations should…
  • always avoid matches from the same author
  • allow matches from the same author if there is other commonality

With TagFest, have any of the recommendations improved as tags become more streamlined?

I won’t be able to tell the impact of TagFest until after a data update becomes available that includes the changes from it. I’m looking forward to seeing whether results are improved. In theory they should be.

Hmm, I never responded to this.

I thought this might be me. I find it very interesting it gave recommendations to works I tested and really liked without any data that I’d played/liked them. That’s a good sign of predicting things well.

Here’s an additional overview.

NO PERSONALIZATION

  • Gigantomania: played, liked parts of it but not others. Think I rated it 2/3 stars, back when I used to rate stuff more? I might’ve been harsh – I remember it had interesting ideas.
  • Tex Bonaventure and the Temple of the Water of Life: tested and enjoyed
  • A Tale of the Cave: never played.
  • Square Circle: never played.
  • The War On New Year’s: never played

BOTH

  • Escapade: never played.
  • You Will Select a Decision: 5 star
  • In a Manor of Speaking: tested. To brag a bit, if you ask the door at the end about me, it says something really nice.
  • Treasures of a Slaver’s Kingdom: on my list for a long time.
  • Yon Astounding Castle! of some sort: very much enjoyed, meant to review, never did

PERSONALIZATION ONLY

  • Dinner Bell: tested and really liked in a “I want to write that” sort of way.
  • Hell in a Hamper: played and really liked.
  • Pick up the phone: imitated it for an Apollo game so yeah this checks out
  • Dream Trap: never played
  • Downtown Tokyo: never played

The Magic 8-Ball is online with the most recent IFDB backup data (through November 30, 2024). There are a lot more Christmas-themed games than I had ever heard about…
