Let’s play: Time all things come to an end by Andy Phillips.

Yes, it’s another Andy Phillips game featuring his trademark action and impossible puzzles.
A few notes before we begin, I’m not sure how regularly I will be able to post and because this is such a complicated game and so easy to lose I’ll be saving and restoring often.
I have left the game text as is but the scores and my own comments will be in brackets.

Onto the game, this is a time travel story so before I can truly begin, I need to get my Time Machine working.

Prologue: breakthrough.

“Due to the circumstances and lack of developments in your project so far, your contract will be terminated, effective immediately.”
That’s what he said. Some stupid corporate moron sitting in his office, wearing a daft suit and DigiCorp Technologies tie. Years of work, dozens of failed experiments, all the effort, simply to be phased out by a bunch of stupid company directors. As you stand alone in your laboratory, thinking about what might have been, you feel desolate. If only the blasted machinery would work!

Laboratory
The lab is a complete shambles. Hurriedly stacked pieces of paper make your
workbench in the centre of the room totally unrecognisable. Steps lead up to the
rooftop, the lab storeroom is to the north, and the exit from the laboratory is
to the south. In one corner of the lab is the result of what is in effect your
entire life’s work, the translocation machine.

(Just what every scientist needs, a secret lab.
It’s just a shame that mine is going to get shut down unlesss I can do the impossible and get my Time Machine going and I was never very good at DIY.)

examine machine
The machine consists of various components, stuck together in a rather mishap
fashion (practical work never was your strong side), the largest being a
platform at the base of the machine. Other prominent features include a panel to
one side and a large red button. You wrote down all the details in your lab
notebook, if only you could find the thing.

From outside the building comes the muffled sound of thunder.

examine button
The red button is located on the surface of the translocator and “ACTIVATE” is
written boldly on it.

The platform is circular and is about a metre in diameter. Around the rim of the
platform are several lamps, which are dark.

examine papers
The many papers on the workbench represent your past labours on this project.
Some contain various notes you have made during the course of your work, others
merely useless pictures and scribbles.

Buried under the various notes you find your laboratory notebook. You pick it
up, hoping its potentially valuable information will be of some use.

The notebook contains various entries about the the temporal translocation
project.

(To look up an entry in the notebook type “Consult notebook about ”,

consult notebook about machine

“Temporal Translocation Machine”

Machine which aims to implement travel between two temporal gateways,
establishing a corridor between the gates using the void as the travel medium.
Travel involves acceleration of time defect between entry and exit points. So
far no success recorded in the project.

(In other words a time machine, involving almost instantaneous travel. Of
course, you have to get it to work first.)

void in notebook
That’s not a verb I recognise.

consult notebook about void

“Void”

Temporal vortex existing between the entry and exit points of all temporal
corridors. Research suggests extreme danger in exposure to the elements,
especially if the temporal defect is sufficiently large. Resistance to forces as
yet untested due to lack of materials.

Storeroom
The storeroom is not in the mess that the laboratory is, primarily due to the
fact that it is almost completely empty, most of your things have already been
taken away by DigiCorp officials, leaving a shelf on one wall as the major
storage place inside the room.
A triangular picture frame hanging on one wall catches your attention for a
reason you are unable to determine.

On the shelf are a small screwdriver and a short length of cable.
(Triangular you say?)

examine picture
A picture in a triangular frame, showing a man with some kind of electronic eye
sitting behind a table. As you look at him, you feel that one day this man will
become a problem for somebody, but not for some time yet. A caption has been
written under the photograph, "Time is but a series of ever increasing
triangles.

Roof
The roof of the DigiCorp Technologies building is an empty expanse of concrete.
A strong wind causes ripples on the surfaces of various puddles of rain,
providing strong evidence of typical English weather. Peering over the edge of
the roof, you can see the lights of the Chelsea area of London stretching out
across the landscape. Steps lead back down to the laboratory.

A dodgy looking piece of wire at one side of the roof serves as the building’s
lightning conductor.

(well at least I know where I am now, Chelsea famous for the Chelsea Flower Show and for the invention of the worlds first functional Time Machine, I hope.)

examine chelsea
You always thought you could see an interesting pattern of triangles when you
looked at the lights, but were never able to work out why. The lights look
dimmer than usual, probably because of the bad weather, though you can’t shake
off the feeling some event of world shattering importance is about to take
place.

(there seems to be a theme developing.)

It is a small spherical object, about the size of a cricket ball. On one side is
an opening for a connection.

You attach the cable to the opening on the power source.

There is a rumble of thunder overhead.

shock is the last thing you feel.

humming noise. The lights around the rim of the platform shine brightly. As you
watch, some kind of hole gradually appears on the surface of the platform. It
grows larger until it becomes as large as the platform itself. It’s working.
After years of disastrous experiments, the machine is finally working. You feel
on the edge of the greatest scientific breakthrough of all time.

You take a deep breath, and then step into the hole. You suddenly feel a
wrenching sensation all over your body, and you watch in amazement as a vast
array of comets, planets and stars fills your vision. It is as if the whole
universe is a part of you.

You feel as though you have been torn inside out, the pressure from the
surrounding void is enormous. You notice a white dot, which grows larger, as it
gets closer you see it is triangular in shape. Finally the pain becomes too much
and you slip away into unconsciousness…

It’s interesting to consider that Philips had the idea of inside woman as far back as 1996.

I’m back for more, when I left off I had just managed to make my time machine work and without any forethought of the consequences, I lept into the void, I don’t know where I’ve ended up in several important questions remain.
What is the mysterious Xeron project?
Will I ever make it home? And most importantly of all, will I ever get that cuppa I so desperately need.

CHAPTER 1: THE XERON PROJECT

Garbage Bin

As you slowly come to your senses, you see that you are covered in items of
junk. Gradually moving it aside, you realize that you are in some kind of
rubbish tip. At any rate, it certainly isn’t the laboratory…

Although you seem to have survived the trip, your possessions appear to have
been lost somewhere on the way (or should that be “sometime”.)

The bin is small and cramped, its walls seemingly made of rusted metal. Light
enters through the “roof” above, and there is a tiny hole in one of the walls.
An assortment of rubbish obscures the bottom of the container.

You can make out some voices in the alley outside the bin.

“You took your time getting here Carpenter. You made a mistake trying to
interfere. One man can’t stand in the way of progress.”

[Your score has just gone up by one point.]

(I wonder if this friendly gangster will do me a solid and tell me the way to the nearest police station.)

out

Alley
The alley is narrow and dimly lit, running between two buildings. Next to the
western wall is a garbage bin. The alley ends in a brick wall to the north. The
light is somewhat brighter to the south.

As you step into the alley, you notice a man being held at gunpoint by a
leather-clad figure wearing a helmet. There is a brief moment of stunned
silence, before the figure raises a weird-looking object and presses some kind
of button. The man yells “NO!”, before you feel an immense agonizing pain and
fall onto the ground, a neat hole burned in your chest.

*** Time has caught up with you ***

In that game you scored 4 out of a possible 200, in 33 turns, making you a crazy
scientist with no brain whatsoever.

You can hear a man’s voice, in which you detect a sense of fear and urgency.

“Is that what you call it? Progress? Who for? Killing me won’t stop anything.
The security of the complex is foolproof.”

wait.
Time passes.

The second voice is somewhat distorted, carrying a threatening tone.

“You always were a fool, Carpenter. It is only a matter of time. An amusing pun,
don’t you think. Time? The Xeron Project will ensure that I shall have plenty of
that.”

wait.
Time passes.

“You must stop it. You’re dealing with something you cannot comprehend.”

“Oh, I comprehend. It is you that doesn’t realize the possibilities. And I’m not
going to let you ruin my dream.”

There is a sudden high pitched whine, then silence. You feel your heart rate
increasing.

wait.
Time passes.

After a seemingly everlasting silence, something is tossed into the bin next to
you. Somewhere close by, you hear an engine starting up. The noise of the engine
fades into the distance.

Your eyes are immediately drawn to the top of the front page of the newspaper.
The date reads “July 20th, 2065”. You read it again, then immediately pinch your
arm to convince yourself that this isn’t a dream. The implications of what you
have just learned are staggering. The machine WORKED!

Your joy turns to despair however, as you realize you are stranded here-unless
you can find a way to open a time corridor back into the past.

again.
A copy of the “New London Telegraph”, dated July 20, 2065. The front page is
about recent political problems of the Republic. None of it makes any sense to
you, and you don’t have the patience to read any further than the front page.
(so they’re still reading newspapers in 2065?).

The alley is narrow and dimly lit, running between two buildings. Next to the

In the shadows of the alley is Carpenter’s corpse.

The man called “Carpenter” is clearly dead. Smoke is still coming from the hole
in his body. The black jacket looks fairly intact, however.

take jacket
TheThere’s no need to take that with you. Besides, it could prove incriminating.

search body
You briefly search the corpse. The killer seems to have done a pretty thorough
job, as you don’t find anything useful.

As you finish searching the body, there is a murmuring sound from the direction
of Carpenter’s mouth. He’s still alive!

You look around for help, but nobody is in sight. Carpenter starts to speak with
his dying breaths,

“Please. No time. Time…”

You lean forward, trying to hear what he’s saying.

“You must stop. The project. Xeron…Xeron project. The keystones. Time in
danger. The apartment. Key to apartment, hidden down in the…”

Carpenter suddenly becomes still, clearly now dead. Your mind races. What was he
trying to tell you?

best get out of the area, before someone shows up.

s

Corner of Street
You are at the corner of a street, which extends to the east. To the west and
south the area is dark and sinister-looking, apart from the occasional glimmer
of several signs located on rooftops. To the north of you is a dimly lit
alleyway.

e

Boarded Up Building This area is even less well lit, because several of the street lights seem to be
non-functional. On the north side of the street a building has been boarded up,
and an inch-deep gutter runs along the edge of the road. There is a lighter area
of the street to the east, whilst steps descend downward to an area under the
street level. Next to the steps is a faded circular sign.

You notice some vehicle tracks, leading from the gutter onto the road.

examine tracks
The tracks appear to have been made recently, by a two-wheeled vehicle. It was
probably the vehicle the killer used to leave the area.

examine gutter
The gutter is full of useless pieces of litter. You are about to turn away, when
you notice something glinting. There appears to be a steel button in the gutter.
You reach in, pick it up and examine it closely.

Quite small, about a couple of centimetres in diameter, and shiny. It has the
letter S engraved on the rear side.

You think for a moment. The tracks lead away from the gutter where you found the
button. It could just be a coincidence, but you think you may have found a clue
to the killer’s identity.

[Your score has just gone up by one point.]

examine sign
The sign used to be a red circular one as far as you can tell. The writing has
mostly faded, but you can still make out some of the letters, “BAK…S…ET”.

examine building
A series of wooden planks block the building’s entrance, they look as if they’ve
been there for some time. Faded black writing covers the surface of one of the
boards.

read it
“Harrods. Closed by order of Schmeist ElectronCorp, 2034.”

(I’m guessing the sign is supposed to say Baker Street but Harrods is actually on Brompton Road in Knightsbridge.)

down

Disused Station
This area has clearly been out of use for a long period of time. The platform
area is deserted and the tracks are covered in dust, ending abruptly in boarded
up tunnels. Steps lead back up to the street level, and the platform continues
to the east.

There is a young girl here, currently trying to force open a vending machine on
one of the walls.

The girl turns to observe you with evil-looking eyes, before turning her
attention back to the vending machine.
(Which would make this underground station Knightsbridge station so given that I came from Chelsea, I haven’t moved very far spacially speaking.)

e

Disused Platform
The platform has fallen into disrepair. Perhaps decades worth of dust lies on
the cracked concrete. The station exit is to the west.

In the north wall is a large rectangular hole, big enough to fit through.

n

Lavatory
You are in a foul-looking lavatory. Graffiti has been written on the walls, the
pipes have practically rusted away, and the area smells of unnameable chemical
compounds.

Most of the toilets are non-existent, though one is still standing.

As you enter the lavatory, you hear a noise behind you. Turning around, you
notice the young girl has entered, standing in a position which effectively
blocks your exit from the room. The fact that she now holds a glowing knife in
one of her hands would suggest that you are in a somewhat messy situation.

(Don’t mind me, I’m just a humble scientist with a family, please don’t carve me up like a turkey at Christmas.)

point gun at girl
You aim the gun at the girl thug, trying to keep an expression on your face that
reflects you know exactly what you’re doing. The girl backs away, looking less
certain of herself.

The girl has frozen, a look of fear on her face.

[Your score has just gone up by two points.]
(I don’t trust her, I reckon she’ll try and stab me the second she gets a chance.)

breathing. Curiously, you notice a plastic bag has been placed into the toilet.
You take it and drop it onto the floor, before closing the lid.

You can’t see inside, since it is closed.

You’ve stumbled onto something big here, though you don’t know quite what-yet.
(Wow Carpenter, subtle.)

Name: Carpenter, K.D.
Address: Gerants Heath Estate
Date of birth: 23/02/22
Occupation: Scientist
Place of Work: Trion Institute

You have reached the end of the street. There appears to be no way to carry on

On the edge of the road is a car of some kind. Peculiarly, it seems to be
hovering some distance from street level.

The car is painted black and is strangely hovering above the ground. There is a
door towards the rear of the vehicle. Through the windscreen you can see a man in the front, seemingly taking a nap.

lost moron. The rules are simple, you get in, you give me the destination, I
take you there. You have a problem?”

Hovertaxi
The interior of the car is fairly plain. The driver is sitting in the front,
before some kind of weird control panel, containing some kind of wheel and
various digital displays. There is only one door you can see, the one you
entered the vehicle by.

The taxi driver looks expectantly towards you.

driver drive to gerants heath
That’s not a verb I recognise.

Driver, drive to gerants heath
“OK, corper. Best fasten your seatbelt, here we go.”

He must be living in the past, there is no seatbelt. Your mind races as you go
over that last thought. The past…

From your experiences you have had over the last hour or so, it’s clear the
translocation project worked, the newspaper making it even more of a reality. As
you look through the window, you see the city of London several hundred metres
below you as the taxi carries you towards your destination. It has changed a lot
over the decades that have passed, looking even more of an ugly place than it
did back in the last century. As the taxi descends back towards street level,
you feel the mystery of Carpenter could be your ticket back home.

The driver looks at you thankfully. “That will be twenty three creds corper.”

give disc
(to the hovertaxi driver)
The driver takes the metallic disc and does something with it on the panel. He
then returns it to you. “Have a pleasant day.”

You get the feeling you’d best leave before the driver takes his troubles out on
you. You open the door and step out.

Housing Estate
You find yourself in a large square area, part of some type of housing estate.
The buildings around you seem to be made of concrete, so evidently some things
have remained unchanged during the years. Steps lead up to the front of a small square building, the area is lit by yellow coloured street lamps and a street leads off to the north east.
There is the silent whirring of some kind of some kind of engine as the taxi vehicle floats off into the air and vanishes into the night.
(Your score has gone up by one point.)
And that’s it for this session, next time I’ll be breaking into carpenters apartment.
