Keystrokes echoed to output window

When I’m using the Windows IDE (both my old 6L38 install and 10.1.2), whenever a keystroke is read using “the chosen letter”, the keystroke is immediately echoed to the output window.

However, I think most interpreters do not echo the keystroke (which is my preference).

Is there a way to suppress that echoing in the IDE output window?

It looks like this echoing stops after the first command has been typed. (It’s odd, but easy enough for me to work around.)
