Hello. I would like to sell my IF game on itch.io games and use Inform 7 to do it. Can anyone tell me how to do it?
- Write a game in Inform 7. This is the hard part!
- Use “Release along with an interpreter.” to make it into a playable website.
- Upload it to itch.io.
- Charge money for it.
- Advertise and get people to pay money for it. This is the other hard part!
Thanks so much Daniel. That’s exactly the answer I needed.
One addendum: make your game downloadable and set a minimum price.
If you make it “playable in the browser” it cannot be monetized, though this is a good way to make a free demo - make the demo playable in the browser and the entire game a paid download.
If you want a downloadable game, step 2 gets a lot more complicated, unfortunately.
Oop, didn’t know that part! Good addendum.
Make sure to set your expectations appropriately!
I’ve had two paid Inform games on itch before.
One was small and not very fancy and wasn’t advertised. Over about 4 years, it made $0.
Another one was one of the biggest Inform games ever made, was heavily advertised here and on a few other forums, and had a trailer and custom art. It was one of the top-selling games in its category for a few days. It made in total $200 in gross revenue over a few months, with most of that coming in the first couple of days. I knew this was what I could expect and I was happy with it, but I definitely wouldn’t think of selling Inform on itch to make a living.
